vioxx fallout hits merck profit; 300 suits filed

merck & co. inc. says that third-quarter earnings have plunged 29 percent because of its vioxx recall, and the company has disclosed that more than 300 lawsuits have been filed by users of the arthritis painkiller. the withdrawal of vioxx, the biggest drug recall ever, has reduced merck's third-quarter profit by $552.6 million, and the company predicts 2004 earnings will fall as much as 11 percent.

new trial of celebrex, and questions on its timing

less than three weeks after merck withdrew its arthritis painkiller vioxx from the market because it increased the risk of heart attacks, pfizer inc. has announced plans to test if its best-selling painkiller celebrex, which is in the same class of drugs as vioxx, can do the opposite - help prevent heart attacks. but pfizer's announcement is raising questions.

what a surprise. the very day the vioxx announcement came out, the tv stations in my area flooded us with lawyers asking "did you take vioxx???" :uhoh3:

i took it for about 2 months and stopped since it did nothing to help my arthritis pain.
