VGCC or other options

New to ALLNURSES and love the site!

I have started taking my prereqs at VGCC. This will be my first degree but I have seen numerous posts advising students to pursue the BSN route as it's often quicker (VGCC uses a point system for admission and though I'll be eligible to take the TEAS in Feb.. it's unlikely I'll have enough points to get in for the '08 class). Would you still advise the BSN route for a "first degree" student, as well?

Hi Jacq2010,

Welcome and congratulations! I think choosing the BSN or ADN route depends on your personal situation. I'm going the ADN to BSN route b/c I don't have a degree and because I work full-time. Going to a community college allows me the flexibility that a university wouldn't. After I get my ADN I'll still have a few more classes to take before I can get my BSN, but again, I can take those classes at a community college. It's going to take me longer to achieve my goal but I'll get there just the same. By the way, my community college accepts students in the nursing program on a points basis too. I'm hoping to get accepted into the Fall 09 class.

Good luck!

Welcome jacq2010! :balloons:

Why not apply to both? Some students end up waiting 4 or 5 years to get into a NC community college ADN program. The BSN programs have a larger enrollment and it is often easier to get into these programs. Sometimes students can graduate from a BSN program in the same amount of time it takes another student to get accepted into and finish an ADN program.

Best wishes to you :)

Choices choices choices!!

I think I will apply to both and just keep taking transferrable classess at the CC, for now. Perhaps the credits will help admissions from dwelling on my less than ideal high school years!

Thanks for the input!
