  1. This is just my second semester taking prerequsites. I'm take A&P1, English, a computer class, and I work full-time. I have my TEAS coming up and a deadline looming for the nursing program. My mother has been having some health issues, my step-father has one foot in the grave, and my daughter, she's a senior in high school (prom, money, college applications, money, graduation, money). You get the idea. Life has been a little overwhelming lately. Then we have today. Gorgeous, warm, sunny day! I get to work with a few extra minutes, which is rare for me! I'm an EMT-I and if you can imagine this, EVERY SINGLE CALL was textbook easy from beginning to end. THEN we got a call from dispatch that our unit was needed for something and we were allowed to go home early! I go home and take my dog out. We adopted him late last year so he's still a big baby. Outside he keeps stopping with his ears perked up. I'm having a hard time getting him motivated to walk so I stop, listen and wow, I can hear birds singing! My little fella obviously can, too. On a whim I put him in the car and go for a ride. Roll the windows down and let him hang his floppy little ears out the window, while I, half paranoid, hang on to his lease. This is a first for me...and him, and I can't tell you how good it felt to be riding around with my little puppy! After fourty-five minutes of aimless driving we go home. I apologize for this being long but, for me, the world slowed down enough today for me to catch my breath. Feelings of "I can't do this" flew out the window as I realized "I am doing this!' It's too easy to get caught up in the things we have to do and we forget the things we want to do. It's refreshing. All that being said, how do the rest of you refocus when it all gets to be a little tedious and overwhelming?
  2. Does anyone know of a website for dummies that will solidify the concepts of osmosis and diffusion for me. Even when I think I have a handle on these, the ability to describe them escapes me. I want to understand them, not just have textbook definitions. I'd appreciate any and all help, advice and prayers at this point!
  3. At our school, if you've been continuously enrolled, you have the right to graduate under the terms which you enrolled, even if it's years later. A similar situation happened to me. I completed all of my English classes and then the requirements were changed. If I had stayed in school I would have been fine but I left before I finished my degree and have since gone back. Now I have to take the "new" English classes. I'd check with your advisor or the records office.
  4. Hi. I'm not a nurse (yet) but I do work full-time in a job that provides direct pt care in an environment much like you've described. When it gets to be too much, I remind myself that I took this job not to make friends but to make a difference for my patients. If you enjoy what you're doing, plz don't let these gossipy people deter you from doing what you love. Be friendly but stay out of the rumor mill! I've confronted several coworkers about issues that involved me directly, in a professional way and in private, and kindly pointed out that I would appreciate if they had a problem with me, discuss it with me as I was the only one who could solve, clarify or otherwise set straight the issue. Good luck
  5. I've checked and yes, the prereqs are different. For ex. at the school I've been attending, you can take a one month computer class, (necessary before you can even qualify for the admissions test), another local CC you have to have a semester long computer class (goes right along with the required basic algebra, bio and chem). I'm also looking into 4-year programs but I am SCARED of Chemistry! Barely passed the one I had to take already, luckily it didn't count toward my GPA. As far as the general ed (credit) classes go, they're all pretty much the same. It's just what you've got to have to qualify for each program that is driving me nuts
  6. This semester will be my second semester taking prereqs for NS. After spending some time on this forum, I've come to the conclusion that it wouldn't hurt to apply to more than one school. PROBLEM: all the schools have different prereqs to even qualify for the program...one requires a full semester of a computer class, another will take a month long con-ed computer class...CNA required at one, not at another... For those of you who applied to multiple schools, how did you handle it? Most schools around here are on a point system. I don't want to waste valuable time (and money, no financial aid) taking classes I don't need, but I need to get some general ed classes to even be competitive... Any advice from those who've been there?
  7. Choices choices choices!! I think I will apply to both and just keep taking transferrable classess at the CC, for now. Perhaps the credits will help admissions from dwelling on my less than ideal high school years! Thanks for the input!
  8. New to ALLNURSES and love the site! I have started taking my prereqs at VGCC. This will be my first degree but I have seen numerous posts advising students to pursue the BSN route as it's often quicker (VGCC uses a point system for admission and though I'll be eligible to take the TEAS in Feb.. it's unlikely I'll have enough points to get in for the '08 class). Would you still advise the BSN route for a "first degree" student, as well?
