Now that you are halfway through the program can you tell me what to expect ?!
I'm starting the lvn program spring 2010 at vernon college-wichita falls campus.
I'm nervous/excited/anxious/ etc. but have no idea what its going to be like.
Thanks so much!!!
I actually dropped the LVN program like 2 months into it. Not cause I was failing but because I am on my way to Korea and I didn't think I would be here to finish the program. I can tell you this. You have to do a lot of studying (A LOT). You have to be patient because you will be treated like u are a kid in middle school all over again. You have to have common sense because some of the instructors will assume you know at least half of what they are talking about. ( Even though you won't know cause you are a new student) You will have to figure out a lot of things on your own. They will tell you that you can ask them but to be honest they don't have the time to explain certain things like they should. Flash cards are your best friend. NO joke. You must be able to study any and every where. Holding a job while in school would be a big mistake. If you have children or a husband, Make them understand that mommy will be very busy and will need quiet study time. Thursday will be the longest most boring day of your week. A lot of exams on this day. Your lab/ clinical Teacher will give you a lot of quiz. There is gossip and drama so stay away from it. The positive will come when you graduate and get paid more then typical people.
Enjoy!!!
Thanks!
I will def. stock up on flash cards! A friend of mine in Houston did the lvn program there and also recommended flash cards.
I am married and my husband and I know that this will be a hard year but it will all be worth it in the end.
I have a full time job, but am quitting before school starts because I knew it would be impossible to do both.
I hate drama...so thanks for the warning! I am there to learn a new career....I'm not sure where others find the time for drama and gossip!
Also thanks for the heads up on the intructors. I hate it when they can't assist you when you are unsure of things, but I guess they are too busy with 60 other students.
I guess I will start dreading Thursdays now! lol
Were you there long enough to start clinicals? What are those like?
Thanks again. At least I have a better understanding of what I'm heading into!
I dropped right when the clinicals were getting ready to start. So I can't say to much about them, sorry. I have all my book from the first semester as well as the nurse pack. I haven't used anything in the nurse pack at all. I am looking to give them to someone if you are interested u r more then welcome to them. They have been sitting in the trunk of my car since the last day I went to school. Most of the books have been high lighted and i bought them used from the book store that way. The person who had them before high lighted all the good parts so it is very helpful. Let me know if u r interested. The only book that I wont give away is the drug guide...
Oh wow, really? That would really help cut the cost a little! If you're sure you don't need them...then sure I'll take them. I live in Jacksboro, but I should be in Wichita between the 16th-19th helping my parents move into a new house. So if I could meet up with you sometime then that would be GREAT!
*edit* The cost of books isn't already included in the tuition is it?
No way the cost of the books in its self is about $500 for the first semester. Then u add the nurse pack at $58 and the uniforms at $115 give or take. and thats just the first semester. So yes it would save u money. You can pm me and I will give you my number. I will save the books for you and when you come into town I will give everything I have to you. Believe me I wont need them I figured out that nursing is not my calling.
Hey, I don't think I can pm yet.
Thanks so much again! My husband and I REALLY appreciate this! It'll help us out with the cost being cut some!

Hi! I am an LVN student, but I am taking my classes in Seymour. In response to being treated like you are in middle school, I didn't feel that way at all. Our instructor in Seymour is AWESOME. The classes build on each other. If you cover Urinary system in A&P, you will be covering urinary in your skills class too. Later in the year, if you don't remember something about the urinary system, she will stop and go back and explain it.
There is a lot of work involved, but I maintained a 4.0 during the first semester. My cousin just went through the program last year, and swears the first semester is the hardest.
We do almost all of our clinicals at the Seymour Hospital. The benefit: it's very small, and the other nurses there are all about letting you learn. Whereas in Wichita, the nurses are there to do their job, and a lot of them don't care if you are clueless about what is going on. (I had a friend who started LVN in WF last year, this was her experience.)
One tip: If you do buy used books, make sure they come with the CD. My instructors pulled a lot of test questions from the CD. Especially my Microbiology teacher. Usually there are questions at the end of the chapters... Look over those because they will end up on tests too.
Good luck!
