Ventilator Acquired Pneumonia

I changed my capstone project to the following:

" Nurses' role in preventing/reducing Ventilator Acquired Pneumonia in Mechanically Ventilated patients". I didn't want to chose a certain population because I found many nursing journals about it just in general. I need to do a 2-3 sentence thesis statement identifying the problem within the scope of nursing. Any help??

I am not sure if I should choose a certain popuation, because I already found many nursing journals about the topic in general.

You already have a population- "mechanically ventilated patients". VAP is a risk for all intubated patients regardless of their age.

For your 2-3 sentence statement, I'd structure it like this:

1. Identify the prevalence of VAP in intubated patients.

2. Share at least one way in which VAP contributes to poor outcomes. (Such as longer hospital stays, higher mortality, increased use antibiotics).

3. Explain that with proper assessment and intervention, VAP is preventable.

You might also include that VAP is a nurse-sensitive quality indicator. Should get you a few brownie points!

I agree you already have a population: vented patients. Just so you are up to date on your project, VAE (vent-associated event) algorithm has replaced VAP plans. Also, I was taught VAP is hospital acquired, but I believe the "A" in VAP is for associated, not acquired. Good luck!

Just wanted to add, with VAE in place, it shouldn't change your project much, it's more for reporting purposes, not so much clinical practice, I believe. Didn't want to scare you!
