Ventilation Settings - Help?

Ok, I can't find my book at the moment, and all info I google is like greek information to me. Question is:

What are the SIMV mode and Control mode on a ventilator, and also why would you use PEEP on an ARDS patient with a ventilator?

blah. turns out at least 10 questions over the 50 questions on the test (30 on lower resp and 10 on cancer) were over mechanical ventilation, and we didnt get a lecture. prof was in late pregnancy and had high bp and htn, so she was on bedrest. had to teach ourselves mechanical ventilation =(
