I was hoping to get your input on how common it is that a VBAC ends up causing uterine rupture?- Is this something that you've seen?-and how does it turn out when it does happen?

Thanks!

In 20 years, I have seen one "rupture". It was a VBAC who delivered successfully with no problem and went into shock in the recovery period. Lochia normal, fundus firm, BP falling, HR rising, marked pallor, confusion.........you get the picture and thank heaven I did very quickly. Poor dolly ended up with not only a mediolateral epis ( common at the time ) but abdominal surgery as well to repair the old suture line in the uterus which had pulled apart. She recovered nicely and being that she signed a consent for VBAC with all risks explained was ok with everything.

med surg nurse here cruising the ob forums, (interested in the switch) Last semester of Bsn school did entire OB rotation with a preceptor and our patient was a vbac whose uterus did rupture. Let me tell you it was the scariest thing that I had seen ever. Patient rushed to OR lost a lot of blood baby was real floppy on delivery Rushed to NICU mom went to ICU post op intubated. I do not know the outcome for mom or baby, but I always think of this case when I think of VBAcC's. Probably b/c it was my only experience with it. I had my first baby vag and my second c/s due to breech presentation. Would seriously have a hard time with a VBAC myself b/c of my previous experience. But what do I know since school I have always worked med/surg so my OB knowledge is slowly fading away,
