Vandy NMW/FNP applicant question

Hey, Nate! Although I'm not in the program you're shooting for, I am a Vandy nursing student. Personally, I applied in January and was accepted in March. I have heard some others mention they were accepted in January, but I do not know when they applied. I don't think it would be out of line for you to call Admissions just to make a general inquiry as to when they will make admissions notifications. I do know they admit on a rolling basis; there is not a magical date when all letters are sent out.

I am in my first semester here and I love it. When they tell you it's an "accelerated" program, they ain't just whistlin' Dixie so if you decide to come here be prepared to hit the ground at a full-on sprint.

I am not an RN (yet) so I'm in the on-campus Pre-Specialty year right now. My courses this year are all "live" and then clinicals are held at area hospitals.

The 2nd year of the program can be done full-time here OR (in some specialties) a student can combine online coursework with traveling back to Nashville for "blocks" of live courses which amount to 4-5 days at a time approx. 3 times per semester.

Personally I'm here for year one and then I'll be moving back home to complete year two. My home town is within driving distance so I can come back for the blocks pretty easily; I'll give up my apartment and stay in hotels while I'm here on campus. I know some who live across country and will be flying back for the blocks. There's a lot of choice and flexibility within the program, where that is concerned.

Thanks for your input! You aren't the only one who has commented on the intensity of the pre-specialty year--I go to Elon U. in NC and had classes with a student in the pre-specialty year and a student in her first year of Women's Health NP and they have both echoed what you said. Good luck! What specialty did you choose to pursue? And aside from the crazy pace of this first year, have you been happy with the pre-specialty program to this point? I visited campus this summer and got to meet with the program directors of my chosen specialty (Profs. Schorn and Rasch of the NMW/FNP dual-program) and the assistant admissions director for the specialty (Cheryl Feldner). They were all fantastic and it seems like an incredible place to learn and grow. So to quote Jack Johnson, I'm just "sitting, waiting, wishing..." and hoping to hear something in December or January.

You know, Vanderbilt is like any other place on earth in that there are those who work HARD to find things to complain about. Me, I'm still happy every day to be here and very thankful for the opportunity to get a great education.

Hi Nate,

I applied for the Direct Entry as well but, with the Pediatrics focus. I received an email a few days ago that said my application was received and complete-- I just need to send in new transcripts when my Fall grades are available since I'm taking Micro and Anatomy this Fall. The email said that decision letters would be mailed in early March. It sounds SO far away.

In the mean time, I better go study for my Anatomy final.

i applied to the pre specialty program looking to go into FNP

let me know if you guys hear anything!

have you guys heard what others say re: going direct entry and then full time into their masters specialty? some people said its hard to find jobs since we dont have experience as an RN. any thoughts?
