what are the chances I'll get the job off the waitlist? Is it kind of just a nice method of rejection or do I still have hope?

There's definitely a chance! I know two people who got off the waitlist and into their specialty of choice, and a few others who were offered to get off the waitlist and into positions on other units/tracks.
