Vaccination Reqs. for CNA Clinicals?

Published

So I received my official acceptance letter into my CNA course last week and, things around here being a little crazy, I didn't have a chance to really sit down and look at the vaccination requirements (we have to have them before clinicals) until this week. Just my luck, the office is closed this week for spring break so I thought I would post it here and maybe someone can answer some of my questions.

I'm starting to freak out that I won't get to start my class (begins in the middle of May) because I won't have all the required vaccinations before clinicals begin. I don't know the date that clinicals start, but my class is three nights a week and runs until the middle of August (I think it's about 140 hours total).

Here's the list:

  1. Varicella vaccination or positive titer or documented history of disease
  2. Rubella vaccination or positive titer or documented history of disease
  3. Mumps vaccination or positive titer or documented history of disease
  4. Reseola vaccination or positive titer or documented history of disease
  5. Tetorifice vaccination or shot record showing current immunization (within the past 10 years)
  6. Hepatitis B (HBV) waiver
  7. Hepatitis B #3 or positive titer

For the varicella, mumps and rubella, I hope my titer comes back positive, because I'm having trouble finding my out-of-state medical records (lived in Maine when I had the MMR vaccinations and the chickenpox). Tetorifice vaccination shouldn't be a problem.

Now, my questions are:

1) What is reseola (#4 on the list)? I had thought it was roseola, but there isn't a vaccination for that, or is there?

2) Hepatitis B vaccination (#6 and #7 on the list). This is the big problem. I've never had the shots and I've heard it is a three doses over six months. Do you think I'm required to have all three before starting clinicals or is that what the waiver is for? And what is Hepatitis B #3? Is it the third shot in the series?

This is the part that has me confused. A requirement for a waiver for the HBV and then you have to have Hepatitis B #3 or a postive titer. Can someone clear this up for me?

And the most important question:

3) Are you usually required to have finished all the shots in the series (in case, God forbid, all my titers come back negative or I can't find my records) before starting clinicals? Or is having proof of the first shots in a vaccination series enough as long as you get the others after the waiting period between shots/doses is over?

I'm going to my doctor on Monday to get her to order the titer tests. (*Please come back positive, please come back positive...*)

I hope I get to start my class. :o

Well, you've given me a big reminder that I need to get jumping on my vaccinations! I would talk to an instructor if possible, they should be able to tell you the specific requirements about the heps, if they need to be finished or not before starting. Good luck, I'll keep my fingers crossed for your titer results!

Oh, I'll definitely call my school on Monday, probably after my doctor appointment. I'm just trying to see if anyone can give me an idea about these requirements so I'm not freaking out the whole weekend. :uhoh3:

Good luck with your vaccinations!

Hi in our class we either had to have the Hep B vaccine series completed (3 in series thus #3) OR sign a waiver.

On Reseola I wonder if they mean Rubeola? We had to have positive titers (or vaccination records) on Rubella, Rubeola, Mumps, Varicella; Tetorifice tests & the Hep B vaccine or waiver.

Our due date for the above was 2 weeks after the start of class.

Now that you mention it, reseola is probably rubeola (quite a typo though). I completely forgot about measles vaccinations. Hopefully I'll get my medical records with my MMR vaccination and/or a positive titers.

I guess if they could make such a spelling error with rubeola, maybe they could forget to put the waiver and Hep B #3 requirement on the same line with an "or" between the two. I can't figure out what else it could mean otherwise.

Thanks for your reply.

In my class we had to have proof of the same vaccinations that you do. With the Hep B vacc, they required you to have them STARTED but since the class is only 12 weeks, there's no feasable way you could complete the Hep B series.

Thanks for your post.I'm thinking that's what the HBV waiver is for, i.e. if you don't have the full series you sign a waiver stating that you realize the risks, etc.
