VA: Any RNs Working with Convictions or Mental Illness?

Hello everyone!

I know that the Virginia BON reviews all applications on a case-to-case basis, but I just wanted to reach out to any practicing nurses that applied for initial RN licensure with a criminal history. I read a lot of posts about success with prior DUIs, but what about things like disorderly conduct or simple assault? Or even felonies, both violent and non-violent?

Additionally are there any RNs that had to explain suicide attempts/mental illness in relation to a prior charge? If so, were conditions placed on your licensure?

Why I am interested: I am currently applying for my license. I have a disorderly conduct misdemeanor conviction, stemming from a manic episode almost 5 years ago. During the incident I was charged with assault on the officer preventing me from hurting myself (which was ultimately reduced to disorderly conduct). I have written my explanation letter and am obtaining court documents and letters of reference. In my letter I completely own my mistakes and behavior, but some extenuating circumstances are that I was undiagnosed with bipolar disorder and also caught my ex cheating. Receiving that diagnosis, correct medication, and moving away from that toxic relationship solved my emotional instability. I have not have any further convictions/incidents, and have held a hospital job for the past 3 1/2 years.

I've done exceptionally well in nursing school, and know I am taking all the right steps to procure a license. However, it would be nice to read some success stories while I wait!
