Hey! Does anyone know what the work schedule is like for nurses at UVA? Is it self schedule or do they make one for you? Do you have to sign up for on calls?
Also, can you work 12 hour shifts? I heard there was a lawsuit awhile back on working over 40 hours and now they are strict that you have to put 40 hours in a week. 3-12 hr shifts is 36 hours and I heard that to make it up you have to come in for 4 hours to make for the 40 hours. Not sure if that is true or not.
I'm looking to move to Charlottesville at the end of the summer and I love working my 3-12s. Thanks! :-)

HI there. I can tell you there are a few ways to go. Firstly, yes we no longer work 4 12 hr shifts one week and then 3 the next--which would total 80hrs for a two week period. Many of our nurses, including me, have switched to a .9 position which is 3 12hr shifts weekly. Full time you work 2 eights and 2 twelves a week.
On my unit we self schedule, but there is also the option of having a pattern. For example if you only want to work Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, you ask the scheduler if that is cool, and most times it is.
I really like working at UVA. I moved here from Florida, and NYC before that, so I think the people of Virginia are very very nice. Also, my manager is awesome.
