UTMB FNP Clinical Stipulations

Published

Hello,

I am accepted to the UTMB FNP program but I was wondering about the clinical stipulations of the program.

1. Does the program limit clinical instructors to only FNPs or can clinical hours be obtained with a physician?

2. Approximately how many times per semester are campus visits required?

3. Are clinical hours allowed in an emergency department or are hours limited to outpatient primary care sites?

Thanks in advance, really appreciate it!

Specializes in I have learned a little bit about a lot.

1. Does the program limit clinical instructors to only FNPs or can clinical hours be obtained with a physician? You may obtain clinical hours from a nurse practitioner, physician assistant, and/or MD/DO. You must have at least one preceptor be a nurse practitioner to complete the requirements from the BON (just started Spring 2019 semester)

2. Approximately how many times per semester are campus visits required? Each semester you are required to attend POCE - approx. 30 mins SIMS lab starting in FNP I. In advanced health assessment plan on going to campus for a 3-4 days (same week)

3. Are clinical hours allowed in an emergency department or are hours limited to outpatient primary care sites? Your role as a FNP is to be in the community (according to the program director) although FNPs work in the ED, Urgent Care, etc therefore you may not use the ED for clinical hours with the exception of NP diagnostic reasoning 6 hours)

I graduate in Dec 2019 from UTMB FNP program . The information given can change before you blink so be very flexible and try not to feed on other peoples high strung nature. Just relax! Have a great school year.

BTW: Start looking for preceptors NOW!!! There is a new "law" that all schools have to find your preceptor or you can report them to the accreditation people but still won't help you find a preceptor if there is not one in your area. DO NOT pay for a preceptor. DO NOT stress about it start day 1 once you find one each semester send them a touch base EMAIL confirming they will still be able to precept you, etc.
