UT Medical Center

Published

I am about to graduate nursing school in a month or so. I will be moving from out of state to TN. I was wondering on thoughts about the UT Medical Center for a new graduate RN. Nursing school trained us to manage 4 patients, but once I visited the hospital and interviewed they run a 6:1 ratio. Any thoughts on how to manage 6? And on the hospital itself? Thank you!!

Hi! First of all, CONGRATULATIONS! I'm sure you've worked really hard to get to this point. Welcome to the fold! :) I am a staff nurse at UTMC, and let me just say that I love UTMC! I'm not certain which floor you applied for, but I am assuming you are applying for a night shift position as day shift on the acute care floors is max of 5 patients. There are hospitals in this area that won't think twice about assigning you 8 or 9 patients at a time, and UTMC is the best as far as nurse to patient ratio goes. The orientation process at UTMC is fantastic, as you are taught to handle the patient load adequately. We are a family, and we are a team. Most of us are very good at guiding the baby nurses, and you will always have help. Remember, nursing school prepares you for ENTRY into practice. It'll take time, but you can do it! Feel free to send me a private message if you'd like to talk more! Best wishes!
