Using wise nursing judgment with narcotic administration

Published

Anyone know of a good evidence-based article regarding safe practices related to narcotic/sedative drug administration? Something that may help determine when it's best to withhold a drug and additional ways to help protect the pts who are receiving them (like a cont pulse ox to monitor respirations, O2 sats, etc) and/or types of pts to be especially cautious for adverse side effects (like the elderly, respiratory pts, etc)???

Thanks!:nurse:

what about the patient who is being treated for chronic pain? Their tolerance builds up and MD/nurses sometimes label them as "drug seekers" so they may have their pain undertreated. Ought to be something out there on chronic pain, maybe in palliative area.

I actually just did a VERY interesting CEU on pain management in the chronic pain patient. If you want to PM me w/ your e-mail I'll send you guys the PDF. It's from a site called Advance Nursing and the CEU was free, and I included all the information so I don't believe it's copyright infringement. I enjoyed it a ton, so if the article is interesting to you, I'd encourage you to grab the CEU from their site as well!
