USF nursing students,
I need to take this next semester, and I normally work on the day the live class is offered. It's also offered online, which is the section I signed up for. Is there a benefit to taking it live, for those who have? I also have fundamentals and assessment next semester. I'm not going to starve if I drop another shift, but I'd like to work as much as I can while I still can. I've taken online courses before, and did fine, but I really prefer having an actual lecture on material to learning it on my own. How much does it help in this class?

I will be taking this class next semester. You posted this in 2007 so I am sure you have already taken this class. Who did you take and what is this class all about? Any good pointers about the online vs live? Any info would be nice.
Thanks MB!
I took it with Diana Lane online, but I didn't see her name on the USF faculty page just now. My section was really easy, one paper, no exams, several discussion boards. Several of my friends took Maguire on campus, and their section was much harder. They had to really study and many people did poorly on her exams. The class average was an A in my section. It's a nursing research class, and statistical knowledge isn't really required. If you have any experience reading and evaluating scholarly articles, it's not difficult at all - I have a prior psych degree that I had to conduct research to get, so the concepts were nothing new to me. You don't have to actually do any research, just read several articles on something nurse-y and write a paper on them. Hope that's helpful! If you have any specific questions, let me know.

Hi mlee,
I took this class last semester (spring 2008). It was basically a nursing research class. I took it online, and it was probably my hardest class because it required a lot of work. We had 3 exams, and we could write up 3-4 critiques instead of taking the exams. I did the optional critiques twice and probably got better grades than if I were to take the exams. We also had a few discussion board things to write, as well as a
1) Quantitative critique
2) Qualitative critique
3) Final evidence-based paper that was a 3-part assignment, the paper being the 3rd assignment (maximum 12 pages)
The critiques are 6-8 (?) page papers - you have to choose either a qualitative or quantitative research article and critique it according to the guidelines given to you by your instructor.
Feel free to PM me as well for additional questions. :)
