Urgent care training for new grad.. is there one ?

Published

Hello everyone , I have been an NP for 1 year in cardiology .. I was comfortable because my background as a nurse  was CVICU. Now,  I got offered a job in urgent care and did not expect that there will be no training or preceptorship.. I shadowed for a day and I was on my own the following day . Is this the norm? I was very transparent with the manager who hired me that I do not have UC experience or ED experience at all. Im feeling so unsafe! I can fake it till I make it, but my conscience is telling me I'm not safe.. does this happened to anyone ?

I was recently hired at an urgent care and was transparent as well. Told them I come from a year of primary care background, all veteran adults, and a year and a half of doing annual at home wellness exams of adults for insurance companies.

I completed my third training day on Friday and start my solo shift on Monday, which is tomorrow. I am nervous because I will be the only provider physically on site, but I don't feel unsafe. I have instant access to the directors and other providers through a messaging app and UpToDate for the latest and greatest medical information.

Thankfully, they start and rotate all newbie providers at historically slower clinics. I spent one training day at my home clinic, which is one of the slower ones, and one training day at another slower clinic, which I will be working at as well. Then I spent my third training day at a busier clinic, which gave me serious anxiety, but was told by my trainer that I would not be working that clinic anytime soon.

I've been studying on my own and once I scratch up enough cash, I am going to purchase an urgent care bootcamp. One of my trainers recommended „Master Clinicians Urgent Care Membership". She, too, had no UC experience when she started and it helped her a lot. It is expensive at 1k😱 for one year of access.

I wish us both the best of luck! If you ever need to reach out, message me🙂

If you are looking for something free for now, Google „VuMedi" and sign up. I am finding it useful.
