hello!
i am applying for UPMC St Margarets school of nursing in may when my current semester is over. i have pretty good grades this semester, 4 a's, a B, and a C. but i havent done so great in the past. so my overall gpa will probably be just above a 2.0(its currently a 1.8). i have a 450 in math and a 530 in reading on the SAT's. I am really hoping my SAT scores and my essay ill be enough to get me in. the essay topic is what does becoming a nurse mean to you.its supposed to be about 300 words. im going to copy it and id love some opinions on what everyone thinks, and if they think i should wait to bring my grades up to apply! thanks
What becoming a nurse means to me
Have you ever had a passion? A passion is something you can spend 24 hours a day thinking about. It is a dream that you cannot imagine living without fulfilling. Nursing is my passion and it means everything to me. My mother is my personal inspiration to become a wonderful nurse.
Growing up, my mom was in and out of the hospital. I would watch nurses come in day after day to help her and make her comfortable. After years of this, the hospital staff became my personal heroes. After seeing the care that she received, I just knew that this was my dream. I said "I want to do that". When I did lose my mother in the summer of 2011, I made a promise to myself that I was going to become the best possible person I could be for her. I was going to become the best nurse I could be.
I have tried my hand in a few different career paths, but the road has always led me back to nursing. It is what I know, it is what I love, and it is my passion. I have big dreams and I am ready to work hard to succeed at what I know I was meant to do with my life. Nursing to me means becoming someone's eyes when they cannot see, or someone's ears when they cannot hear. It is about helping others who would not otherwise be able to help themselves. Nursing also means proving to myself that I can succeed at the goals I set forth for myself. Being a nurse is being the best version of me for the people whose lives I can help and positively impact. If I could change just one person's life for the better, the way my mom's nurses did for her, I would be happy.
I have not always had the highest marks or the best grades, but what I do have is the passion and drive to change that. In my time at CCAC I have greatly improved my grades from my first semester to my last. I have the determination to work hard, get the grades, and change someone's life. I will become the best possible nurse I can be for me, my mother, and for the lives that I will someday affect in the most positive way possible.
