Upenn MSN

Published

I'm a April 2013 Foreign graduate of BS Nursing in the Philippines. No license yet. Still waiting for my CGFNS CVS NY. I'm planning to apply to University of Pennsylvania for their Master's and eventually become a nurse practitioner. My second choice of school is John Hopkins University. I know I'm completely starting from scratch and a little ambitious specially with my not so good grades I obtained in he Philippines. But I believe I can get through the Master's program just not sure how to enter because I'm new with the process of American schools admission. Please help me. I've read the through their website about this GRE and GPA thing. Which is completely new to me. I've research about it but can't understand completely. Does anybody here who is a foreign grad who took master's in UPenn or any other Universities?

What is it exactly about the process that you don't understand? GPA is your grade point average for all of your college coursework. GRE is a test that you have to take. Since you are from a foreign country, you will likely also have to take TOEFL test as well. I do not mean to discourage you, but if you say that your grades are not good, then it will be very difficult for you to get into an NP program, especially top programs like U Penn and JHU. These programs typically have a 3.0 (B) GPA minimum but an average GPA of 3.5 (B+). If you're above 3.0, then you still have a chance, but you should have very high GRE and TOEFL scores, great letters of recommendation, and an outstanding personal statement. You are indeed ambitious, and I wish you the best with your endeavors.

Also, any traditional graduate program in nursing (for those who are already nurses, not the "direct entry" MSN programs for non-nurses) in the US will require you to have RN licensure in the state in which the school is located. Some programs require you to have some specified amount of nursing experience to be eligible; I don't know if that's true of Penn or JH, so you might want to check on that now.

As already noted, the two schools you mention are v. competitive; if your undergrad grades are not great, as you mentioned, you may have a better chance at less competitive schools.

Best wishes for your journey.

Thank you so much for the replies. I really wanted to enter grad school. They say that the grading system here are different. Back in the Philippines I remember having to struggle to even get a grade of 85, but I was surprised when I cousin of mine could obtain as high as 98 in a university. That is why Even with the kind of grade that I have, I want to take my chances still. If these two schools are very competitive, what good nursing grad school will you recommend?
