Unsure about what academic path I should take

Published

So I am currently 20 years old. When I graduated high school I was planning on becoming a nurse. My mom has worked in a hospital since I was little, I grew up in that environment, I love it.

I started my education at a community college: cheaper classes for prerequisites.

But, when I got there, I lost confidence in myself. Just being honest, and I am not proud of it at all. But I switched my major because I was struggling, I felt ashamed for struggling in classes like A&P because I was so used to doing well in school and I was scared to fail.

So I switched my major to Psychology because I was already interested in psychiatric nursing. I love it. I got my confidence back in regards to my academic abilities. I just graduated with my associates of Psychology this last May of 16', and am on track to finish my BA in 1.5 years. I am working at a mental health center, and I love helping my clients and applying what I learn to help them.

But ever since I switched my major I have felt like something is missing. I want to be a nurse. I freaked out, and lost my confidence, and switched my major, and I regret it. So what do I do?

Do I finish my prerequisites for nursing school and not finish my bachelors in psychology? Or should I finish my bachelors in psychology and then get enrolled in an accelerated program for people who already have a bachelors?

I come from a family who believes you can never have too many degrees. My mom is pushing me to finish my bachelors in psychology, and then do nursing. She told me that she knows a lot of nurses with another degree.

I have always loved psychology...I chose to change to psychology because I was interested in being a psychiatric nurse one day....so that's kind of been a constant.

But if I do both then that is so much money. It will be twice as expensive...but I think I will be happier...

So what do you think?

I just need some life advice. I have been thinking in circles about this and it's driving me crazy.

I love psychology, I love the classes and the program I am in. But I want the end result to be nursing. I only have 1.5 years until I finish my Bachelors in Psychology...so should I just do it?

I want to be successful, and do the right thing.

I have a type-a personality and this is the first time in a while I haven't had a steady plan so I am kind of going crazy.

Some friendly advice would be nice....

Thanks in advance

Couldn't you do an ADN in nursing and then eventually transfer many of your original liberal arts credits towards a future BSN?

I could do that. So that would be along the lines of not finishing my BA in Psychology and just doing nursing.

I am trying to decide if I want to

A) just do nursing and leave my psychology program behind.

B) finish my BA in psychology in 1.5 years, and then take another 1.5-2 years to get my BA in nursing through an accelerated programs.

I recommend that you change your major to nursing, because that is what you really want and it makes the most sense financially. If you love psych, you can go back later and become a psych NP. You really can't do anything with a BA in psychology.

But whatever you decide is fine. Both options are good, I just think straight to nursing is a little better. Good luck!
