Hello, I've recently been accepted to the University of Las Vegas as a pre-nursing major. (Still not sure about acceptance into the nursing program) Does anyone know if they go by a point system?? I don't really know how the point system works either, can someone explain it to me. Also any helpful tips for the HESI A2?

Hi Alexisis!
I am a freshman at UNLV, in my second semester. I am also a pre-nursing major. I have done tons of research , talked to others, and advisors about the UNLV Nursing School! It is very competitive, but with the right amount of preparation, studying, and dedication, you can make it :)
You have been accepted as a pre-nursing major, which means that you have to complete all the pre-requisites required before you can actaully apply to the nursing school. You can find all the pre-reqs here: https://www.unlv.edu/sites/default/files/degrees/worksheets/2016-17-DegreeWorksheet-BS-Nursing-PreNursing.pdf . You want to make sure that you get a B or better (strive for an A) in all of the classes on the calculation sheet. The UNLV SON does everything based upon points - there are no interviews, no letters of recommendation, and no volunteer service requirements. Therefore, it is crucial that you not only maintain a 3.0 GPA or higher for admissions, but that you maintain a high GPA in the classes that are on the calculation sheet and that you score high on the HESI exam. Here is the calculation sheet that they use: https://www.unlv.edu/sites/default/files/page_files/27/Nursing-CalculationWorksheet.pdf . Do not worry about Chem 110 and Chem 111, they took those off of the requirements.
I guess it's never to early to start studying for the HESI, here is the sheet that UNLV SON has provided for us on the HESI: https://www.unlv.edu/sites/default/files/page_files/27/Nursing-HESI-A2-ExamRequirements.pdf
If you have any other questions, feel free to ask! I know that I had lots of questions when I first applied and even now.

Hi,
This reply is super late, but I want to add-on to what bsnoptimist said.
Acceptance into the nursing program is based on a points system that only takes into account your grades and your HESI score.
(You also need to pass all your general education requirements with a C or better, and have a 3.0 GPA)
You need a minimum of 88 points to apply, and you have two attempts at applying.
There's a maximum of 48 students accepted in each semester.
Focus on getting As in the classes listed on the Nursing Calculation worksheet (https://www.unlv.edu/sites/default/files/page_files/27/Nursing-CalculationWorksheet.pdf). Try to get only 1-2 Bs and do well on the HESI because it's very competitive.
I wouldn't worry too much about the HESI A2 exam until you're almost done with your pre-reqs. I used this book (Admission Assessment Exam Review, 4e: 978
