Did anyone apply to the graduate entry program in nursing (GEPN) at the University of Washington? (http://www.son.washington.edu/admissions/gepn/)
This program is ranked number one by US News and, by all accounts, one of the best in the country.
I got an e-mail from them on Monday:
It sounds like we should hear something by next week. Did anyone else apply? Maybe this can be the official notification thread.
Hi hikeNH,
I wouldn't say I had a great deal of health care experience prior to applying. I did volunteer at two local Seattle hospitals for about 7 months each, one in the ER and the other in an inpatient trauma unit. I volunteered with a local organization supporting children and adults with disabilities for about a year. However, I would say most of my experience both during undergrad. and the years post-graduation have been focused on research working in an academic lab. I'm assuming having research experience is highly recommended since UW is a major research university, but having quality health care experience is also really valuable.
Also, I spent a lot of time talking with nurses, nurse practitioners, and shadowing NP's in the specialty I was interested in.
Good luck for next year! And feel free to ask questions when you're going through the application process.
Niekoshelby's quote above is a good example of the attitudes you will encounter when you question the practices of UW's School of Nursing--that if you are a good nurse with "purpose", you won't criticize any aspect of the GEPN program. In fact, I am here with a purpose, to become a fantastic, caring, critically-thinking nurse and work with underserved populations, and then to potentially broaden my scope of practice and offer even more services to the patients that I have the opportunity to work with. The people who are happiest are the ones who are here with a purpose and who knew what they were getting into.
I researched the program for two years before even beginning the prereq's needed to apply. My problem isn't that I didn't know what I was getting into, it was that I didn't know the poor return I would be getting on my huge investment. Sorry, guys, this is your thread for the beginning of your new educational/career journey, but I could have used a giant red flag like this to slow me down before beginning my foray into this program.

To those accepted to either the GEPN or ABSN programs (even if off the wait-list!):
What kind of health care experience did you have? I am looking to apply to the ABSN in October 2010.
Thanks!
