UTMC is in Knoxville, TN. Methodist South is in Memphis, TN. They're on opposite ends of a wide state.
Other hospitals in Knoxville are Parkwest Medical Center, Fort Sanders Regional, and Methodist Medical Center (Oak Ridge). These are part of the Covenant Health System a private not-for-profit health system. I'm not a nurse, but have been a patient and have had family at those hospitals. Every employee I've encountered has appeared to be very happy. From a patient perspective people seem to enjoy their jobs. I haven't notice that same cheerfulness at other hospitals.
There are also some Tennova hospitals (owned by CHS which is being bought by HMA). I've heard a lot of complaints from employees at those hospitals. These are for profit hospitals.
I can tell you that I live about 40 minutes away from UTMC and they have a wonderful ER. It's one of the largest in the region with over 50 beds. They're also level 1 trauma and academic medical center. The staff there is wonderful and I've heard it's a wonderful place to work. They also are a Magnet hospital. Oh and they are about to renovate their ER in the near future. You can check out their website for more info.
Hi, just thought I would say Hello! I live about an hour from UTMC. I work for Covenant Health. It's funny that you are thinking of moving to TN, and I am moving back to FL in the fall if all works out. UTMC is only hiring BSN, and making many of their ASN nurses get their BSN. I think they have to have a large percentage of their nurses have a BSN to maintain Magnet status. I know it is a great place to work. I would be there if it wasn't over an hour drive. Hope you like it up here. I regret moving here all the time. It was a culture shock for me. I just need to be close to a beach! Of course, I am an hour from Knoxville and where I am there isn't much to do. It might have been different if I had chosen Knoxville. More things to do with the kids. Enjoy!

Hello,
I am an ER nurse in a very busy hospital in central florida. I was wondering if I could get some insight on the ER in UTMC, as my husband and I are considering a transfer. I would like to know things like the pt to nurse ratio, shifts (three in a row or split), time off, benefits, pay, opportunities (such as extra certifications etc), is it usually adequately staffed, pt volume, etc.....
I have it pretty good where I work and I love what I do, but my hubby is in the military and can possibly get a transfer there.
Thanks in advance for any information that can be provided!
Cynthia :)
