University/Student Health Nurse Practitioner

I am possibly thinking about going into student health/University health services as an NP. What is the salary like working at a university health center or other school related facility? Potential? Is it a challenging and interesting job or does burnout and boredom set in quickly? What have you experienced/heard about this field? I would be particularly interested in women's health services, but would like to hear an array of opinions!

Does this count for loan repayment too?

I did a clinical rotation in a University health service when I was an NP student. I loved it, as the clinic was totally NP run and was extremely well run. You see a variety of mostly acute illnesses and have the opportunity to do a lot of teaching. Unfortunately, these positions don't pay well. I believe the NPs made around $60,000 for a 9 month position. They got a little more if they worked during the summer, but the clinic was only open part time and they only needed 1 NP to staff it. These positions don't generally count for loan repayment as you need to work with an underserved population in order to qualify.

I worked at a small to medium sized college. Some of the larger universities have large clinics, complete with labs and radiology. I don't know if they would pay more, but I'd be willing to bet it's still much less than at a private practice or hospital associated practice group.

I would love to work at a college but I can't afford to take the pay cut. It may end up being my "retirement" job.

Best of luck to you.

Agree with the above regarding the salary if you are only doing student health NP alone. It's typically university funded and the one I'm familiar with was with the state university I went for my ACNP. It is staffed entirely by ANP's and FNP's but many are also faculty in the primary care NP programs at the university (with dual appointments) and this makes up for the low salary in the student clinic.

Are college health/student clinic NPs usually FNPs or will WHNP/ANP or ANP suffice for the role as well?
