I haven't found a thread yet for the applicants to the 2018 Master of Nursing program at the U of M so I thought I'd start this one!
I think we had an earlier deadline than previous cohorts - looks like it used to be on Jan 1? But maybe I'm just looking at the wrong threads...
How does everyone feel about their applications? I felt like my application was really strong until I took the GRE and got average-at-best scores. They are slightly lower than the average scores of applicants the U typically admits to this program but they are better than the scores of average GRE takers overall?? Except for my math score. Big bummer... but I'm crossing my fingers that they excuse my inability to conquer the GRE. My grades for pre-requisites were all As and my GPA for my undergraduate degree was 3.45. I guess we'll see how it pans out.
Did anyone else apply anywhere else? The U of M is my top choice but I applied to UW Oshkosh and got in (!!!!!!!!!!!) to the May 2018 cohort. Unfortunately I have to put down a deposit of $2,500 (uffda) to hold my spot in that program and by the time I hear from the U of M the program at Oshkosh will already have been filled so I can't just wait to hear from the U of M and hope that my spot at Oshkosh will still be available (unless, of course, I lay down the $2,500). But I don't want to take my chances, not get accepted at the U, and then totally regret not taking the offer from Oshkosh!
Hello there,
I wonder if it's possible to change this facebook group name? If someone not on allnurses is searching for a group, they will most likely not think to type in this. It's not optimized to be found in facebook using this name. They will most likely search UMN Master of Nursing Class [Year ], since UMN is the acronym for the school.
AngusinOK I believe for the last application cycle for 2017 admission, there were about 275 applicants, 105 interviews, and 64 spots for the program (so competitive, but not impossible to get in). As far as stats, my cumulative undergrad GPA was a 3.6 when I applied with a 157V, 158Q, and a 5 for the writing portion of the GRE, which were all close to the averages for admitted students in the previous application cycle.
Tea-rex I'm not sure if you're still reading this board, but do you remember if you had any flexibility with buying books for the first semester? I see there is a book package at the bookstore that's at least $1000 for NURS 5029, so I'm trying to look at all the options before making a decision!
Hello! I know this is last year's post but I'm applying to UMN right now for the 2019 entry level masters, as well as direct entry into the midwifery DNP. Does anyone know how many students are generally accepted directly to into both the MN and dnp programs?
Hi ktpineapple For this year at least, I believe our MN cohort had 4-5 students admitted to the direct-entry DNP program for midwifery, which is the most popular one compared to direct-entry informatics, clinical nurse specialist, etc. that only had 1 or 2 students (not sure if that's because fewer people applied to those tracks or if competition is steeper). Most of them had some kind of birth experience, either personally or through doula or birthing education programs. Good luck and let us know if you have more questions!
Hi everyone! I am also applying to UMN right now for 2019. I have couple of questions and will be glad if someone from the previous cohort will answer. First, I am very interested how is interview going? Can someone share their experience, what questions did they ask? how long was the interview? any information would be very helpful! Can someone share their schedule for the last year? Is there any people in the program with small children? How are they dealing with program schedule/ day care schedule etc. I am a little bit nervous about this part. Sorry for a lot of questions;)
futureRN_ From what I remember, my interview took about a half hour and they asked me basically all standard questions that I found when I googled "nursing school interview questions". I found it helpful to practice interviewing with someone else so I could organize my responses better before going in. For the schedule, it depends on which lab section you are assigned to, so I have class this semester for about 4-5 hours a day M/T/W and full clinical days on Thursdays that started halfway through the semester. I'm off on Fridays, though I know some people have classes 5 days a week with different lab sections. I don't have any kids, but we do have a handful of parents with small children (a few under 9 months old) and so far, they've made it work! I'm not sure on the specifics for daycare, but we got our fall schedule in July and should be getting our schedule for next semester in November, so there's a little bit of time to figure out the logistics before the semester starts.
