University of Minnesota 2018 Master Entry Level Nursing

Published

I haven't found a thread yet for the applicants to the 2018 Master of Nursing program at the U of M so I thought I'd start this one!

I think we had an earlier deadline than previous cohorts - looks like it used to be on Jan 1? But maybe I'm just looking at the wrong threads...

How does everyone feel about their applications? I felt like my application was really strong until I took the GRE and got average-at-best scores. They are slightly lower than the average scores of applicants the U typically admits to this program but they are better than the scores of average GRE takers overall?? Except for my math score. Big bummer... but I'm crossing my fingers that they excuse my inability to conquer the GRE. My grades for pre-requisites were all As and my GPA for my undergraduate degree was 3.45. I guess we'll see how it pans out.

Did anyone else apply anywhere else? The U of M is my top choice but I applied to UW Oshkosh and got in (!!!!!!!!!!!) to the May 2018 cohort. Unfortunately I have to put down a deposit of $2,500 (uffda) to hold my spot in that program and by the time I hear from the U of M the program at Oshkosh will already have been filled so I can't just wait to hear from the U of M and hope that my spot at Oshkosh will still be available (unless, of course, I lay down the $2,500). But I don't want to take my chances, not get accepted at the U, and then totally regret not taking the offer from Oshkosh!

Just received a rejection email. So maybe others are up now.

Hi all - received an email yesterday offering me an interview slot! Anyone else? I've already been looking for practice interview questions... Also, I've been reading a thread from last year that has been really helpful. One of the current students in 2017 had started posting on the prospective students' thread with a lot of helpful info so I thought I'd share that in case anyone else is looking to learn some more about the program!! (I think if you search "university of minnesota master 2017" it'll pop up...

shebelb I received an interview offer too, so I'm really excited and nervous! Thanks for letting us know about that previous thread

Has anyone been able to go to or login for one of the info sessions? Every one has been during a work shift of mine so I have been unable to go but I'm really wanting to know what's been discussed. Like... do we go to class every day or just a couple days a week and do the rest online? How long are classes? Are teachers available or are they for the most part off campus working at other jobs? (Etc....)

shebelb I was able to watch one over the summer and they said classes are roughly 8am-5pm, with different times for when clinicals start. They have certain clinicals set up early on (med-surg, peds, psych) with groups of about 8 students and then for the final 250-hour immersion, we would have some say in the population area for that. About 1/4 to 1/3 of students go back for their DNP after completing the MN program. They typically maintain a waitlist of about 15-20 students. These were the notes I took for what I found the most interesting!

Awesome, thanks for the info!

Does anyone know if we should be using the academic update option in NursingCAS for any prereqs we had been taking in the fall? I haven't gotten anything that says we should, but I don't know if they would bring that up in the interview or anything so they can determine our complete GPA for prerequisites or not?

I actually don't know... I finished my pre-reqs a year ago so I'm not in the loop on this one. BUT, if you're worried I would definitely do it. No harm, right? But in terms of the interview... I can't imagine they would ask you about that. Maybe but I think they're going to spend more time on other stuff. Obviously that's just a guess since I haven't done mine. :S

Maybe I'll ask at the interview if I remember. It's hard for me to focus on anything else because I just keep thinking about it coming up! Mine's on Friday, so this could either be a really long or a really short week!

Have you heard anything yet??

Nope, I'm guessing we'll hear back at the very end of February since interview invites went out on the last possible day also. I had a dream that I got the email and then I woke up and was really disappointed that it didn't actually happen!

Me neither!! Waiting is the worst part!

And that's too funny about your dream - I had a dream that I got an email too and excitedly told my family/friends and woke up and was so bummed.

Let me know if you hear anything! !
