Before I ask a question let me introduce myself, after all I am new. My name is Sumaya and I'm going to be entering my third year in college. I recently changed my major(social work) to nursing. The school that I'm interested is the University of Minnesota, and I was informed that the BSN program is very competitive. I'm not confident because I don't have any experience in the medical field and not a lot of people get accepted to the program. For example, Last year 400 students applied and only a 100 and something got accepted. I want to hear from people that attend the University of Minnesota nursing program so that I can have an idea of what to expect. I hope I made sense. Thanks!

Sumaya,
I felt similar when I applied to the program 10 years ago. I had no medical experience, and I had bounced around to several colleges before deciding on nursing.
In my application I wrote about life experiences that had directed me towards pursuing nursing. None of the experiences were while I was working in any medical capacity. In the admission process I think that credit taken @ U of M also carry more weight than those that are transferred in, so it would be good to take some of your pre-req.s @ the U if you can.
They also LOVE research, so if you have done ANY research,or assistance, or data collection,or statistics, include it!
Don't focus on not having bedside experience, focus on what you do have.
THere will be at least one more person watching the "How to make a hospital bed" video besides you. Those are the easy skills to learn.
Good Luck!
Armytruck,
Thanks for the advice and taking time to reply to my message. All your suggestions were very helpful. I'm afraid that my gpa would be a problem for me to get into the nursing program because i've noticed that a lot of people who get accepted have a 3.6-4.0 gpa and my cumulative gpa is a 3.2. What do you think?
they are not just looking at GPA, they really want well rounded....
My first year of college was 2.8, that got rolled into a few quarters of pre-reqs here and there whih I think got me up to 3.1? for application. Believe me, plenty of those 4.0s dont have the critcal thinking skills for nursing. You will see a huge difference between book smart and practical smart once you get into nursing school.
3.2 is a great GPA don't diminish it!
Okay, Thanks that makes me feel a lot better.
