Hi, I'm planning to move to the Vegas area eventually and I was wondering if anybody could give me info about UMC. What's it like to work in the ER there, the pay scale, the mgmt style, any info would be great? Thank you.

I am currently in nursing school, thus I haven't worked as a nurse at UMC. However, I did do an "internship" there in community health, and I really did enjoy the hospital. UMC is the only county hospital, and their ER is the only designated Level 1 center in southern Nevada. The hospital is sort of "run-down" compared to rest of the Las Vegas/Henderson hospitals, but I think it is one of the best. It has the lowest nursing turn-over rate, and it has the lowest % of open nursing positions (there is usually only 10 open nursing slots at a given time, and it is usually 10 times that for the rest of the hospitals in the Vegas area). This is probably because UMC offers AWESOME benefits (almost impossible to beat). They basically provide "free" insurance if you are willing to go to one of their doctors. They also have an awesome retirement plans. The pay is lower than the surrounding hospitals - new grads at UMC start out at around $21/hour, but an experienced nurse with 5 years of experience would probably go in making $23 or $24. It is an awesome atmosphere as well. Management is o.k. - probably compareable to most other hospitals. The C.E.O. is a wonderful and kind guy who is always willing to listen to nurses, and in fact is a huge nursing advocate. UMC is currently working towards becoming Magnet accredited.
Overall, UMC is an awesome place to work. :)
Thank you very much for the info. Currently I'm working at county hospital and I love it. UMC sounds similar to where I work now. Thank you.
