Unitek or Fairly new school?

Published

So here's my situation: I've applied to numerous RN programs at community colleges for almost 2 years and this last time I applied to 4 colleges and didn't get in to any so I can't continue to wait any longer and I've decided to go to a LVN program. I live in the Bay Area and the two schools I'm looking at is Unitek in Fremont or American College of Nursing in Concord. I've read all the posts on Unitek and I definitely see the good and the bad about the school but of course all schools will have that. I know the program will be intense within the 11 months, but the other school, American College of Nursing, is 12 months and it's a fairly new school (it is accredited) so I don't even believe they have a graduating class and it cost about $25k. I plan to visit the school in Concord on Monday to get information. What questions should I ask? I'm also planning to do the LVN-RN route after but I noticed most of the community colleges require at least a year experience before applying, but by that time my pre-requisites will have expired (after LVN and then a year to work). Does Unitek require that as well or can we go directly to the LVN-RN once we complete the LVN portion? What would you guys do? Any input would be appreciated.

I've never attended Unitek, but from what I hear it's a great school. As for attending a fairly new program I would stay away from it. You're basically the pilot students. Those programs usually struggle because it's fairly new and they're barely trying things out to see what works and what doesn't work. Teachers will come and go. Sometimes you will be left hanging. In looking for a school you really want to see the teacher turnover rate, NCLEX pass results, and talk to current students to get an idea. That's the best advise I would give you. Good Luck

Thanks so much for your help and advice, I appreciate it. I'm planning to visit Unitek to get more information.
