Clinical hours short of NMC suggestion?

World Registration

Published

First of all, I really hope Silverdragon reads this and gives me insight.

I have sent out my application as well as all of my paperwork to the NMC for my nursing license, except my training form. I was trained in the US at an accredited University and received my bachelor degree, which consisted of three full years of nursing training and one year of prerequisites.

I have been working for two years as a theatre nurse.

I passed my IELTS with 9's acrossed the board.

I have had my licensure body fill out the paper and mailed it.

The two references are filled out and mailed.

In other words, I fulfill all the requirements of licensure in the UK thus far.

My concern is: when the dean of my university took my transcripts, she needed to convert the credit hours to actual hours. The clinical hours that she calculated up was in the six hundreds. The NMC suggests approximately two thousand hours for clinical time.

How can there be such a difference?

Will this affect my ability to be licensed in the uk?

I am frustrated that with all of the work and money I've spent on this, that it may not come to fruition. In addition, I am moving to the UK next April regardless of the decision of the NMC, as I will be going on a spousal visa. But I am also aware that there is no more clinical training hours that I could have possibly taken to add up to their suggestion.

Am I missing something?

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Heather

Not having enough clinical hours could affect your application. Really only NMC can make their decision based on your application.

UK nurse training means there is a lot of clinical hours hence the over 2,000 that they list. When on clinical placement the student will do roughly 7 1/2 hours a day 5 days a week and placement could be as long as 7-9 weeks on one ward before moving to another.

Thanks SD. I also read other threads on here that alluded to this issue. As well as the issue that UK nurses have when coming over here. Thanks for your insight.

Interested if there are any US trained nurses who have recently successfully registered with the NMC with their 3-year BSN degree?

I'm moving to Portsmouth but if it turns out that I can't get registered with the NMC then I may have to move closer to Mildenhall in hopes of getting a civilian nursing job at the US air force base hospital there. Major problem with that is that my husband is stuck near Portsmouth for his job.

Of course, I can always scrub toilets or the like.

How about paramedic training in the UK? Does anyone have any info on that?

Used to live in Portsmouth just before I more to Canada, nice place with plenty of historical things to do.

Regarding paramedic this may help http://www.nhscareers.nhs.uk/details/Default.aspx?Id=468 but may have to get in touch locally and chat to them

I sent out my last form to the NMC for registration. Of course, it was my transcript of training form showing all my training hours. Only thing to do now is wait. :anbd:

Hi!

I'm in the same predicament as you, I'm only here in Oxford. I've sent my pack in as well and am crossing my fingers. I was wondering if you've heard anything yet? I hope it works out for you!

No, I have not heard anything. I did ring the NMC today to check and see if they have received everything in the post. They still have yet to receive my training form, but I did not expedite it when I posted it. Should be there by next week, and I will call to make sure they received it. After that, just a waiting game.

I will def reply here when I do hear something and hope that you do as well, as I would like to know how you get on with it.

Everything crossed for both of us!

Spoke to NMC today and verified that they have received all of my documentation. It's just time to wait on their decision. :hdvwl:

I wish you the best of luck!!

Please post how it all went--I'm currently married to a Brit who came over here via US immigration and we'd like to live in the UK for a few years after we have kids to stay close to his parents.

I have a BSN as well...

I just received my decision letter from the NMC today. I sent all of my paperwork with my application out on 25th September minus the training form which I sent out on 2nd October. I confirmed they received everything by 13th October.

My decision letter is dated 25th October and I received it today, 30th October. Talk about fast service!! I have had no problems with the NMC in any of my interaction with them. They receive an A+ from me for providing me with what I needed in a timely fashion.

I started this journey on 19th June when I sat for my IELTS. All the headache and paperwork has been well worth it.

If anyone else from the US has any questions, please feel free to ask.
