Union?

Hi everyone,

Yesterday my NM called an urgent staff meeting because management has recently caught wind of Union activity in the hospital (600 beds, largest hospital in the state). 4 years ago there was a union vote but it didn't pass (I started working there right after). Of course the NM was very anti-union and told us all to "watch out," and be wary of the union calling your home, harassing you at work, etc. She said she didn't think she could continue in her position if a union was voted in, and quoted the VP of nursing as saying "I will lay down on the ground before I let a union come in here."

I would love to hear from those of you who have worked in unionized facilities about pros/cons of unions, since I don't know very much about them.

Administration can have no say in whether or not you unionize. Its illegal for them to interfere. In fact, what your NM did is illegal and should be reported to that union. Your VP's comments are illegal intimidation and also should be reported. She cannot stop you from unionizing. Only the workers can do that to themselves. Its their decision alone, not your administrators. But administration will try to fight you, lie to you about the union, give you false information to scare you, intimidate, & coerce you into voting "no" & not unionizing. They know they cant stop you from unionizing but they will try to use your fear to make YOU stop YOURSELVES. Dont listen to anything they say. You have to wonder why they try so hard to stop nurses from unionizing. Could it be that unionizing might give nurses some POWER in the facility that they dont want you to have???? Hmmmmmm.

If there is "union activity" at your hospital just remember that the union and the administration will put their own spin to everything. Try to keep a clear head and make your own judgements. Both the union and the administration have their own agenda and unfortunately, the nursing staff can get lost. Question both sides and ask for proof for each of their claims. Despite what administrators say the hospital won't collapse if the nurses unionize and not all managers are the devil despite what the union says.
