Unexpected pregnancy dilemma...

Nursing Students Student Assist

Published

Hello readers,

Im in the BSN program in one of the nursing school in the lower mainland. I am now at the end of my second year and is doing consolidated practice. I just found out I am 3 weeks pregnant. I have no intention of quitting school. Are there any moms out there or anyone who actually went through the program being pregnant? Can anyone reassure me that I can still go through the last 4 terms with a newborn?

Any input will help =) Thank you.

:yeah::yeah::yeah:Congrats on being pregnant! I can't give you much advice because I've never been in your situation, but I've known people, and it's possible, and again congrats!

Thank you. It is kind of a weird situation. Im 23 years old and have always been using contraceptives-- both pills and condoms. I guess things happen for a reason.

i think there's a few different threads around on the boards about the same subject but i guess you'd have to search for it, and yes some things just happen!

I unexpectedly got pregnant when I was applying to an accelerated nursing program. After much prayer, contemplation, and discussion I decided to defer my enrollment for a year. I tried going full time at first, but soon found it much more manageable to go part time. I have met other nursing students with infants/toddlers that went through the program full time. Going through nursing school and being a new mother have been very challenging. It's not an easy road, but it has been incredibly rewarding. Some lessons I've learned along the way: be willing to ask for and accept help, make time for self-care, and give yourself permission to modify the game plan. If you decide to do the program at a slower pace, it's OK. You'll still accomplish your goal. I also found that motherhood gave me a huge advantage when studying maternity nursing and in my peds rotation. I wish you all the best!!

I have 4 terms left in my full time program and just found out that I'm pregnant...:uhoh21:. Except this is my 3rd LOL. I have a preschooler and an (almost) 2 year old. I've made it through the full time program so far and done very well, so this doesn't change my plans. My school has a part-time program that I could probably switch too it needed, but since I want to graduate as soon as possible I'm going to avoid that. I've been in school since my first daughter was a newborn and have managed to exclusively breastfeed both of my kids. I think my biggest concern next fall will be finding a time and place to pump during clinical.

You can do it! It will be hard, but what isn't? You'll lose more sleep (see my screenname :wink2:) but time flies and you'll be through school soon. I would speak to an advisor when you get farther along and see what kid of options you have.
