UNC Chapel Hill Nursing Program

U.S.A. North Carolina

Published

Hi all:

I am awaiting word from UNC Chapel Hill's 24 month BSN option as to whether I will be accepted, waitlisted or...:angryfire rejected.

Has anyone ever applied to the program? How competitive is admissions, I know UNC is a competitive school, but it could be just a ploy to make us applicants scared! Any insight would be great!

Thanks!

Are you an in-state applicant??

Yes I live in Charlotte and would move up there.

I would think being in-state would give you an edge. At least that's what the admission office told my son when he applied there...not to nsg school. We do not live in NC and they said that was a big factor. He did get accepted, however, but ended up going to Vanderbilt instead.

Good luck.

I hope in state does have it's advantages. I've spoken with the Admissions Director several times and I fill like I have a chance, but I'm worried b/c my first undergrad gpa was really low and I explained to them in my essay how I've matured b/t now and then and I fulfill all other requirements. I'm just worried that my cum gpa, even with my certificate course and prerequisite course grades may not be enough. But they did say if you are weak in one area your application can help if it is strong. But oh....the frequent mention of gpa!

Hi,

I graduated with my B.S from Carolina and the nursing program is definately difficult to get into. I believe the 14 month program is however more competitive than the 24 month program. They have also increased enrollment for both programs and this definately increases your chances of getting in. I am rooting for you and i hope you get to become a "TARHEEL" soon.

Thanks for the info! I'm so worried. My 1st degree gpa wasn't so hot, and I explained this in my essays, I've defintely matured and improved since then and I hope that my strength in all my other areas, my grades from my graduate certificate and grades in my prereqs, and that they see the maturity show through. I was 20 then, I'm 27 now and have had a lot of time to think, mature and realize this is what I want to do. Did you go into the 24 or 14 month option?

Hi stephanie.s80!

I also applied to UNC's 24-month program for entrance in January. I applied to the 14-month program that began in May, 2007 and anxiously awaited news to find out that I didn't get accepted. However, after talking to Ms. Terry about my new application for the 24-month program, I found out that they didn't even look at my application when I applied to the 14-month program because I didn't meet the 3.0 GPA requirement for the 14-month program. I wish I would have known how strict they were about that 2 years ago when I began taking my pre-reqs b/c I had always planned on going through the 14-month program. I also have another BA, and my GPA wasn't that hot either, I only have a 2.7 from my 1st undergrad. Although I made all A's and B's in my pre-reqs, 6 classes compared to 120 hours of my first undergrad degree only brings my GPA up to 2.86, so I too am also very concerned about it. I did the same as you in that my essay this time, I talked about how much I improved as a student, how much I've matured, etc, and I am now anxiously awaiting news as to whether or not I got in. I really hope so b/c UNC is the only school I want to go to b/c I need to sign the contract so I can have income while I'm in school. I really hope I get in this time. I'm nervous about my GPA too b/c I think the average GPA (based from their admission forum) is around 3.4-3.5 and I'm no where close to that, but I'm hoping that they see us both as what we can offer the nursing field and not just as GPA's. I hope we end up in the program together....that would be exciting!

I am looking into any information from current or previous UNC nursing program graduates as to what they got into the program with. I'm excited that there is someone else out there on this forum that also applied to the program. Good luck and keep me posted if you hear anything!!!

Best wishes,

Hi:

I just was your reponse to my question, I'm glad that you can completely relate to what I'm going through right now. Do you think they are as strict for the gpa for the 24 month program as they are the 14 month option?

The 24 month option minimum GPA is 2.5, so you should be good to go. My undergrad GPA was below yours, is was in the 2.0 range, but ugh! But I've done really well in my prereqs and I've explained myself throughly in the essays, so that's all I can do. Anna has said to me that if your gpa is weak or some other area is weak, then the rest of your application can either add or deter from it. So I'm hoping our apps prove that we are great candiates for their program and that you and I get accepted!

Thanks for the info! Good luck to you!

Steph

No, I don't think they are as strict for the 24-month program. They have a 2.5 GPA for the 24-month program. When I read the 3.4-.3.5 thing on the transcripts from their chat session, that was just an average, so they accepted people way below and way above that. I'm hoping and I also don't think that they look at just GPA for the 24-month program. I think for the 14-month program, it's a requirement that you have a 3.0 before they will even look at your application, which is why they didn't even look at mine. I think you did well to explain how much you've grown and matured, etc. in your essay and they will look at other things besides just GPA. I just wish it was time now for the notifications. November 15 seems so far away!! But at least it's almost October so we only have about 1.5 months to go until they start sending out notifications. Best of luck and stay positive!!

PS: You're right, that's all that we can do is try the best that we can. I, probably like you, am hoping so much that they can see how much we've grown since our undergrad degrees since we both have now done well in our pre-reqs, I hope that our hardwork shows. Anyways, I just wanted to say that I agree with you in that basically, we've submitted our applications and that's all that we can do. I was so stressed out waiting to hear back from when I applied to the 14-month program that I swore to myself that this time, I'm not going to get all stressed out about it so I'm trying really really hard to not worry about it, although I'm very anxious.

Anways, have a great weekend and keep me posted. I saw your post about scholarships, I think that's great that there's some info in the NC forum section about scholarships that we can apply for. Are you going to apply for any?

That makes me feel better, I reread that transcript session (the one that you are referring to is the one where I was the only one in the room and asked all the questions, how funny!) And I wasn't quite sure what that meant about the avg. GPA, but then the whole 2.7 thing. So I'm hoping that they look at all aspects of an app and not just the GPA. How can you tell that they accepted below way below and above the 2.5 based on the range she gave? I'm horrible at math, so guessing is not my thing!

I know what you mean about Nov. 15, it's like time is going fast, but not fast enough!
