uk trained starting in canada

Sorry I can't help with your question. But I am a uk neonatal nurse in the process of applying to British Columbia, which area of Canada are you going to? When you settle in to your job if you have any tips they will be greatly appreciated!!

To that end any tips you have now would also be great as I'm just at the start of the process.

I am moving to Northern Alberta.

Good Luck with the application process. Just remember that it will be worth it in the end.

Have you sat the CRNE yet? Make sure you get a good review book-it will help loads!! I also went online and tried the CRNE Readiness test.(linked from the CNA website) It gave me an indication of whether or not I was ready to take the test.

If I can be of any help or you think of any other questions-just ask. I might not know the answers but will try.

Hi, wanted to pick your brains please!

I qualified as RN Adult Sept 02 and hoping to go to Canada also. I've got as far as being offered a job-got official offer letter, salary info, even been out there to visit the ward! but still can't get a straight answer as to whether my Uk training meets the BC requirements. I've asked the recruitment advisor at the hospital, had an ICES report done and e-mailed CRNBC but feel until you pay the fee no-one will tell you-surely there must be somebody out there who knows if the UK training is good enough!

Have you had to do any additional hours in anything or has it been straight forward?

I qualified as an RN Adult in 95. My hours were accepted in Alberta as being "enough". I do not know if BC requires the same hours or not so this may not be much help to you.

I know it is frustrating to have to pay the fee first, but my advice would be -go for it! If you find your hours are not enough there are programs in Canada that you can take to bump up your hours. Perhaps negotiate with the hospital that offered you the job so that if you need the extra hours they could support you while you did this. I think that coming from UK we tend to forget that it is worth negotiating!!!

Sarah here! No I haven't taken my CRNE yet. The province recruiter said that I will initially work with a temporary permit based on my UKCC pin and that they will support me in preparing for the exam when I'm over there. I am a bit stressed though as my general degree was back in 1993-1997. Since 1997 I have specialised in neonates, so I will have to swat up on all the general stuff.

At the momment I'm waiting for a clinical interview to decide which hospital in BC I want to work at. But the person who is to interview me is on holiday!

Hate all this waiting, but a guess I will have to be patient as I realise it can take months for it all to get sorted.
