Nursing Students General Students

Hey I'm a first year student nurse in the UK. I'm at UCE in birmingham.

Are there any students from the UK on here?

Hi,

I am also a UK student, my name is Leanne. I am in my final year at The University of Hertfordshire. This is my 1st post on these boards!

How are you finding the course so far?

Hey,

My friend is gonna transfer to that uni but she's taking a year out in the middle (she's pregnant).

I'm really enjoying the course. I had my first placement from July to September. Was on a surgical trauma ward. It was really good and I felt that I learnt more there than at uni!!

I had no experience what so ever in nursing before I went so I found it a bit daunting at first but soon got into it. I aquired loads of skills and some extra ones which can be put forward to other placements.

What branch of nursing are you doing? I'm doing adult and want to do my degree in Trauma.

im a uk student at luton in semester two, nearly 3!

oh and im doing the mental health branch.

hi joannemojo

I too went to UCE. I just qualified in march 2003. Im in paediatrics. I love my job and it was scarey going from student to staff nurse.

Good luck on your course.

I am studying the adult branch.

I havent yet decided what i want to do when i qualify. I am considering either going on to do my midwifery BSc or possibly try and get into infection control nursing/ work with patients who have HIV/AIDS and/or other infectious diseases.

I start a community placement next week then have an a&e placement after that. My uni have been totally useless when it comes to placements and it is beginning to look like i wont be getting experience in theatres or in ICU/HDU/CCU. It just seems to be luck of the draw with our placements and i am getting fed up with the whole thing. Is it the same at other universities?

Oh cool Uk_nurse, so u finished UCE a month before I started!! Did u find the uni completely unorganised? Our year is having trouble with loads of stuff (esp a certain psychology lecturer!)

I have been able to go down to theatre on my placement. That hapened simply because I asked when one of the patients on the ward was having an op. It was really good!!

I think my next placement is medical. Not looking forward to it tho coz when someone mentions a medical ward to me I just think of bunnions and boils!! lol

yeah UCE has always been the same from what i know. We were the last of the 'project 2000' group and your course is completely different to what i did. I now mentor students too even tho i have just qualified, but i enjoy it. Dont worry about medical ward, i loved it. i know i was doing paeds and you adults, but it is good and you will learn alot. i work on a trauma and orthopaedic ward and we have general medical too. I really enjoy it. Feel free to email me or pm me anytime. Have fun!
