UAB Nursing GPA

Published

What was you guys GPA when admitted to UAB nursing program? I've been talking to the admission counselor and she stated they like for you to have 3.0 to be competitive. She said at UAB the decisions are not based solely on GPAs but the overall application package. I just want to hear from students who have been admitted to UAB in regards to this. Thank you....the last couple of posts I've posted I haven't received a reply, please help a guy out!

my overall GPA was a 3.0 but my nursing foundations GPA was a 3.49. I just got admitted for the fall! It depends on how many retakes you have and also you get points for having worked/volunteered in a hospital setting! when are you going to apply?

congrats on your admission. are you a transfer student? I'm going to apply for the Spring 09 semester....right now i have a 3.29 and i have a lot of work experience in a healthcare field...however, i have 3 other nursing foundations courses that i'll be taking this fall 08 but they won't be counted into the nursing gpa for admission.

also i forgot to write...did you have any retakes?

yes i did have 2 retakes! and i am a transfer student so i had all of the odds against me. Just make sure you state if there was a reason for your retakes in your letter and have a very good understanding of nursing!!

i've written the nursing paper and resume...however, i want to see if you are able to let me read your paper and resume and also see if you're able to read over mine if you have time to let me know if i'm on the right track...mine is a really rough draft right now. I read a nursing paper of one of my friends but she was admitted in like 07 and their requirements then was different from the nursing paper we are required to write.

You need an overall 2.75 to be considered, but obviously everyone has that who applies. Beyond that, the only grades that matter are for your foundation classes (anatomy, phys, stats, chem, nutrition, mcbio, math). The cut off for the semester before last admitted (so Fa 07) was about 3.2. However, they strongly advise that you don't have more than 1 repeated course. Unlike all the community colleges, grades aren't going to get you in automtically or exclude you unless they're really low. (Prob not going to get in below 3.0) They want experience in the health care setting and the essay is important. They really want to know WHY you want to be a nurse and not just "cuz I wanna help people!"

Most people I've talked to in my class had 3.3-3.5 GPA. I had a 3.19 and got in, but I also have 5 yrs working fulltime in healthcare, a previous degree and wrote a really great essay. (Not bragging, I was just really proud if it!)
