U of Michigan Flint - Second Degree Program/CRNA

Hi Everyone!

I have a few questions about U of M Flint's Second Degree Program as well as there CRNA program:

Here's my story:

I have a bachelors degree in business (3.25 gpa, didn't try very hard) and I also have a masters in business. After getting into the real world, I have decided to get back into Nursing which I originally was studying in school. I am in the process of taking pre-req's (taking some at Delta College and UM flint). I am also a Nursing Assistant on a med/surg floor (crazy, crazy floor might I add). I have a 4.0 in the required pre-requisite courses for the second degree program. My question is, do I have a shot at getting in even though my business undergrad degree was a 3.25? Like I said, my pre-req's have been straight A's, I'm thinking that they probably look at those more being that they are science courses? I would appreciate some advice on if I have a chance.......

I would eventually like to become a CRNA, so I realize that I have to keep the grades up. Does anyone know if I do apply for this program someday...will they take my GPA from my business degree or from my nursing degree? I would think that they would just look at my nursing GPA, but I just want to be certain being that I would have been a second degree student.

Thank you in advance for your advice! :yeah:

They look at your cumulative GPA. So all of your credits, but they pay special attention to your last 60 credits usually.

May I direct you to https://allnurses.com/forums/f16/ Use the pre-crna forum the student and the CRNA forum. and just a heads up anything you post will not be posted immediately it has to be approved first so dont worry

jhansen - is it the last 60 credits they take a look at more for the second degree program or crna?

thanks.

Im assuming Nursing is your current or last major. 60 credits is usually the last 2 years of school. They do this for a couple reason first they want to see how you do in nursing courses in general, they want to see what your previous credit load was(CRNA is intense) to make sure you can handle it, another thing they are looking for is trends in your acedemic career whether its good or not so good. If thats not what you mean feel free to clarify a bit.

Oh ok - I see what you mean for the CRNA, thank you.....but I was more wondering at this point about the second degree program. My GPA was 3.25 in undergrad, (business), but I have been getting straight A's in pre-req's...so I wondered if they give more weight in deciding admission to the prereq grades since they are more "science related"

The best thing to do is contact their admissions office and ask them! Most schools will clarify exactly which criteria they examine for their program and how heavily GPA is weighted. They will also likely tell you what GPA (or range) is required to be competitive.
