U of Michigan Flint - Second Degree Program/CRNA

Hi Everyone!

I have a few questions about U of M Flint's Second Degree Program as well as there CRNA program:

Here's my story:

I have a bachelors degree in business (3.25 gpa, didn't try very hard) and I also have a masters in business. After getting into the real world, I have decided to get back into Nursing which I originally was studying in school. I am in the process of taking pre-req's (taking some at Delta College and UM flint). I am also a Nursing Assistant on a med/surg floor (crazy, crazy floor might I add). I have a 4.0 in the required pre-requisite courses for the second degree program. My question is, do I have a shot at getting in even though my business undergrad degree was a 3.25? Like I said, my pre-req's have been straight A's, I'm thinking that they probably look at those more being that they are science courses? I would appreciate some advice on if I have a chance.......

I would eventually like to become a CRNA, so I realize that I have to keep the grades up. Does anyone know if I do apply for this program someday...will they take my GPA from my business degree or from my nursing degree? I would think that they would just look at my nursing GPA, but I just want to be certain being that I would have been a second degree student.

Thank you in advance for your advice! :yeah:

Are you going for a BSN or ADN because you need a BSN to get accepted into pretty much any CRNA program out there. They will be looking at your GPA from your nursing degree, I'm assuming.

I would love to get the BSN right from the start instead of going for the ADN first...I want to do the second degree program because it's only 16 months as opposed to the ADN or traditional BSN which are much longer.

Go for the second degree BSN. You'll be better in the long run. You'll need a BSN to even be considered admission into the CRNA program.

will do - thanks for your input!

Actually your GPA from your first degree will not be looked at. So in your case that would be to your advantage considering how competetive CRNA programs are. This question was asked to one of the directors of the CRNA program at Beaumont/Oakland Univ's orientation this year and that is what they answered. I am sure that most other universities have the same policy since it would be unfair to other students for them to count your progress in a completely unrelated course of study towards admission.

Careful about the second degree programs since they may be a little hectic to maintain the high grades required and universities are NOT going to cut you slack for having gotten your BSN sooner than later - that is your choice to make at your own risk.

Hope that helps!
