I was just wondering when can you start doing externships with the hospitals and how do I go about getting one? Like how early would you suggest I apply and where?
I'm about to start my 1st semester of nursing this fall and I just want to get a head start!

It depends on the hospital. Most want you to have completed at least your foundations semester. Others require you to have completed adult health or be within one year of graduating. That sounds great on paper, but the reality of actually GETTING a job when you apply is slim. Typically 40-50 people (from all the Memphis schools) apply for each job. Methodist has a long waiting list. Baptist hires only a few students each semester. All of them tend to start hiring students that are graduating soon, and move down from there. If you are just starting out, you would have to consider yourself lucky if you can get an externship after your first semester. My suggestion--try working as a PCA or CNA after your first semester (or now if you can swing it). That way you'll have an "in" when it's time to get an extern job. Plus, CNAs only make a dollar or so less than externs, so you'll be making about the same money. Good luck with your first semester! PM me if you have any specific questions.
Thanks! Well I was wondering do I need any special certification to get a CNA or PCA job?
It probably depends on the hospital. Don't quote me, but I think you can get a CNA or PCA job based on how many semester of nursing school you have completed. Otherwise you'll have to get a certification/training. For any of them you'll need CPR certification (but you already have that for school!). If you are really interested, I would go to the HR department of the hospital of your choice and ask. That way you can fill out an application. They may be able to tell you other jobs that you are eligable for. That way, at least you get your foot in the door!
Good luck! And good luck in school this fall. I was there not so long ago...
