U of C - Will They Hire New Grads?

Published

Hello. I am graduating from nursing school in a few months. The prospects for new grads in my area are not too good. I lived in Chicago for a few years and was considering moving back to look for a job (would only move if I actually got a position, I could never just move on a whim). I was checking the University of Chicago Medical Center (U of C) site for info but didn't find anything about new grad hiring (some hospitals only do it at certain times). There seem to be a good number of nursing jobs available but I don't know if they are only hiring people with experience? There is a job listing for a "multispecialty surgery" unit, would this be a medsurge? Thank you in advance to all.

Have you done any externships or held any student nurse assistant positions? That will look good applying into U of C rather than someone who hasn't had any experience during NS

Yes they will. I just left U of C, but got hired as a new grad along with 2 other RN's on my unit. I didn't have any previous hospital experience but had excellent grades in nursing school along with a recommendation from someone that worked there. It's easier to get in if you know someone there but not impossible. Good luck!!!

How was the interview? How long did it take to get a call back?

Thank you for this information. I am a recent grad and applied there about a month ago and haven't heard back, I am assuming they are not interested but may keep trying. You mentioned excellent grades, do they ask for your transcripts? Did the other new RNs you knew also know people at the hospital? I don't and I'm wondering if that will make it nearly impossible for me.
