Tyler Junior College not accredited!

U.S.A. Texas

Published

I went to the discovernursing.com site looking for more schools, and I saw that TJC was listed as non accredited for the nursing program!?! So then I went to NLNAC.org to check it out there, and it was not listed there either! Could this mean that their Nursing program may not be good? I also didn't see University of Texas at Tyler listed as having an accredited Nursing program. Does anyone know anything about these schools Nursing programs?

While attending a non-accredited school will not prevent you from getting an RN license (assuming it is approved by the Board of Nursing), it may make it more difficult to have those credits transferred to another school if you want to further your education later. You may have to repeat some courses if you want to get a BSN later (depending on the policy of the school you wish to attend.)

Most important, it is important to find out WHY they are not accreditied. Did they apply for accreditation and fail to meet the standards? If that is the case, that would concern me because it reflects a lack of quality. However, if they are a new program that is in the process of applying for accreditation, I would be less concerned IF the school was reputable in its other disciplines and committed to being an accredited program.

Find out WHY they are not accredited before you invest your time and money. If there are good reasons that you can live with, then OK. However, I would want to know WHY before I invested and took any risks with them.

That's what I was thinking too! I'm gonna do more homework, cause I would hate to have to retake some of thoes tough classes . BTW, Thanks for the reply!;)

If the program is state-approved, the graduates of the program are allowed to take NCLEX and gain licensure as a nurse. Nursing programs do not need to be accredited; however, they do need to be approved by your state's board of nursing.

There are plenty of quality nursing programs that are not NLN-accredited.

Thanks for clearing that up for me, Commuter! See, that's why I need people like you, cause I'm so lost on some of this stuff! LOL!

I went through the LVN program at TJC and I passed my NCLEX just fine. I thought it was a great school and a great program.

Yeah, it is a great college. I attended TJC years ago myself and never thought once about the accreditation until I started looking for a nursing program. Since this thread has started, I have gotten all the answers I need about their nursing program, and it's accredited by the BNE texas, so that's really all I needed to know. Thanks for your reply, manda!

I just found this thread and it scared me to death, until I calmed down and thought about it. I am a doing my prereqs at TJC and plan to get my ADN there, then BSN at U.T. I have met with an advisor at U.T. and discovered that most of the classes I have taken and had planned to take will transfer, but not all! Beware, I have had the experience of being led down a winding path by my advisor, pirmarily by omitted information! I did check with several nurses in the area before enrolling, and discovered that the nursing program at TJC is well-respected, at least locally. Also, I feel that I have had really wonderful professors at TJC. Admin is another story--I have some major issues--but we won't go there right now. Now, back to homework. Any of you who would like to discuss TJC further are welcomed to contact me--I would love to have a local support group.

I would contact the registra's office at this school and inquire as to why this program is not accredited, and if they confirm that it is not, ask them:

1, What are the advantages/disadvantages of getting a degree through a non-accredited program.

2, If any of the schools' programs are accredited. If so why are they, and why not the nursing program.

One of the thread writers is correct in suggesting that you may not get credit for some/all of the classes down the road, if you want to have them transfeRred.

Your article caught my attention because I may be going to the same school in the fall, so this is of interest to me. I haven't even begun to look into it. Were you put on a waiting list and if so how long? What is your class size if known.

Thanks,.....Sandra.......Dallas, TX

All your classes will transfer for your BSN. TJC is a great school, and you are lucky to have gotten accepted! I'm at the end of my second semester, and will graduate in May 09. I've talked to UT, and know for a fact that all my classes transfer, so you have nothing to worry about. I see that you are a CNA? Being familiar with "hospital life" will be a huge benefit to you--I have been working as a Ns Tech, and it has really helped me. Good luck, and feel free to contact me with any more questions!

TJC is a great nursing school! I did my LVN at TVCC and my BSN at UT-Tyler. TJC has has had transfer agreements with UT-Tyler ever since UT-Tyler opened. The agreements go back to when UT-Tyler used to only offer upper level classes. TJC is accredited through the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. http://www2.tjc.edu/about/Accreditation.shtml I don't really know how the nursing school accreditation works, but TJC students have a reputation for doing well in clinicals and on the NCLEX.

Good Luck in school!

TO: RaElRa: Thanks for your input. I have been a CNA only in home care settings, but yes I see the experiences as an asset to my impending career in nursing. I have not even begun inquiring at TJC. How long were you on the waiting list and how long is the program for LVN/RN, whichever you are knowledgeable about? I am happy for you; you're well on your way.

I got into the program the first time I applied, but I had 105 points--I went into it with almost 4.0. The LVN to RN program if that is what you are asking, is only 2 semesters. They jump into our 3rd semester and finish with us. If you start with LVN, the program is one straight year. Our ADN class began with 40, the class after us began with 44. We are down to about 30, but will pick up more 3rd semester when the LVN-RN transitions come in--probably @ 60? But we will split into two groups, so still about 30 per class. Later!

Can validate Raelra's testimony. I recently graduated from TJC and plan to get my BSN at UT Tyler. I have found the classes I took will transfer w/o any problem, but I went into the program with an eye towards UT Tyler.

I too would recommend you verify things will transfer w/o difficulty before you take them.

BTW, my experience at TJC was terrific. I think they provided a top-knotch experience that prepared me for nursing. I passed my NCLEX w/o difficulty, and am now working on a cardiac step-down unit. Very happy I was able to become an RN for about 1/3 the cost.

Your email was very good. How did you manage to get RN for 1/3 of the cost? I am in Dallas, but may end up going to Tyler to get my RN. I am doing the prerequisites for same at the moment. Do they have an excellerated/fast track program or just the 4 years? I was going to get my LVN, but after joining this web site recently I have decided to get the RN degree. This is just the most fabulous web site as its' contributers afford all of us an invaluable wealth of information. I have learned so much. Thank you one and all.
