1. How/why did you decide you wanted to be a nurse?
2. What would you *like* to specialize in?
Just being nosy!
Great thread!:redbeathe
What made me decide that I wanted to become a nurse was my nephew. He was born over 8 weeks premature and unfortunately, still has some health issues and have undergone a couple of surgeries. But seeing all the nurses laughing and playing with my nephew and really caring for him, made me want to do it.
As for what I want to do, I want to be in the OR. It's a great learning experience and a really exciting area!
I decided I wanted to be a nurse because I taking care of people and talking but really I like doing things that are time sensitive and service oriented when the pressure is on to get a task done efficiently and accurately it makes me feel good. I am interested in home hospice but that may change since hospice is the only thing I have experience in. I see about 8 patients a day driving from house to house which is great because your completely focused on that one individual for the entire time and when your job is done with that person its done till the next day.
1.)When I was 17,I watched my mother give birth to my little brother.I stayed in the hospital with her after she had him,and I was so fascinated with what the nurses got to do.I thought, hey I could totally do this.lol.Soon after the thought faded. When I was 19 I had my son via c-section,so I got to stay in the hospital for almost a week, durring that time I knew becoming a nurse is what I wanted to do.Ever since then I have been set on it.My son is now 16 months, and I am ready to take the plunge into a CNA program.
2.)My ultimate goal is to end up in L&D.I really don't see myself doing anything else,I'm not closed minded to anything else,I am just set on L&D!
i decided that my goal in life was to become a nurse when a group of them changed my life forever. i just turned 20 and was pregnant and to make a long and hard story short-found out a most devastating way that i have an incompetent cervix.
he was born december 8, 1997. he weighed 1lb and 8oz. his name was prince, he was perfect. he lived for 6 hours and passed on december 9th just as the sun rose.
the nurses, who until then i'd just seen as strangers-spectators, sat with me while i cried and spoke in incomprehensible sentences. they encouraged me to see and hold him one last time. they let me stain up their scrub tops and even sat and cried with me while trying to be a comfort. it's a pity that i can't remember their names so that i can tell them how much that meant to me-how much it still does.
so, i love and respect nurses. i hear that it is tremendous and hard work but honestly i can't think of anything more that i would be honored to be. i hope that i will have the opportunity to pay it forward so to speak.
but yeah, not sure what specialty i have a preference for at this moment. i just hope that i can make it through pre reqs, get accepted to a program, graduate, and pen r.n after my signature :redbeathe
1. I am a total hypochondriac, I am hoping this will help. Also, both of my children gave me a few good scares (I would like to know when to worry and when not to). It was this or Forensics, and the money is better. I love the intensity of ER's, that probably sounds bad, but I like to know I had a hand in making a bad situation better.
2. I would like to be a forensic nurse... I worked as a 911 operator and as a legal secretary for the District Attorney's office. It would be nice to help people on a more personal level.
What is forensic nursing like? I'm assuming you work with crime scenes or something? Just curious!
HA HA HA I just realized I already posted to this!!!!! :chuckle
to answer your question... Forensic nursing can be anything from doing SART (sexual assault) exams to working with medical examiners. There is quite a bit of wiggle room and it's definitely a growing profession.
1) I wanted to be a nurse at a young age, because I idolize my grandmother and she was a nurse for decades. My mother always discouraged me. She said I would spend my life cleaning bedpans and vomit and would end up bitter and miserable, in those exact words. I gave up the idea for a long time, until my sister was hospitalized last July (and is still in the hospital) and I was able to see what nurses actually do. There is no other job that gives you as much direct patient contact as a nurse. It's incomprehensible to me how little time doctors actually have to be with their patients. I want to be in the trenches.
2) I'm undecided between two very different fields. My dream is to be an NP or a CNM. As I'm still a pre-nursing student, obviously that's a long way off and nothing is set in stone. I think either way, if I end up an RN or an APRN, I'll be happy in either of these two fields...psych or L&D. On one hand, my life has been touched by addiction in a profound way, and I would love to work with recovering addicts or teenagers with mental health issues. On the other hand, I am very passionate about women's health and can't imagine how gratifying it would be to bring new life into the world. I grew up on a farm and birth was a regular occurence. I witnessed calves being born before I ever got my first sex ed class. Birth is a miracle.
