Tube Feedings

Published

I need help my teacher gave us two pages of Tube feeding problems to use for examples on how to do tube feedings and it's just not enough for me I just don't understand it and I have a final on wednesday and there will be tube feeding problems on it. Can someone please help here is an example

Physician Order: Ensure 3/4 strength at 75 mL/hr per gastrostomy tube. How much ensure and how much water will you need to mix for a 4 hr supply of formula solution ????

Specializes in Neuro.

3/4 means that for every part water, there will be 3 parts ensure.

Then take into account the 75 ml/hr.

Times 4 hours=300 ml.

Of that 1 part water/4 parts total solution.

So (1 part water) *(300 ml)= 300/4= 75 ml water.

Physician Order: Ensure 3/4 strength at 75 mL/hr per gastrostomy tube. How much ensure and how much water will you need to mix for a 4 hr supply of formula solution ????

Or

Total formula needed for 4 hours:

75ml x 4hrs = 300 ml.

Now, 1/4 of that needs to be water.

300/4 = 75.

So, 75 cc of water.

300-75 = 225 ensure

Does that help?

Thanks that helps a lot:-)

Hi - this is not an answer to your test questions, but I wanted to let you know that I work in PICU and do tube feeds all the time, every day, and they NEVER give tube feeds like your example.

Standard examples for continuous tube feeds:

Ensure, 60 mL/hr with 30 mL H2O flush Q4

Osmo 1.5 40 mL/hr with 60 mL NS (normal saline) flush Q4.

Standard examples for bolus tube feeds:

2 Cal HN, 240 mL with 100 mL H2O flush Q4.

Nepro, 160 mL with 60 mL NS flush Q4.

Like I said, it doesn't answer your questions now but at least you can see that it probably won't be nearly that complicated on the job.
