Trouble finding a job in Greenville

Hello !

I was hoping someone could anwser a question for me, I am an RN with over 10 years of experience in the clinical setting, and I am having a hard time finding a job in the Greenville area.

My family and I are re-locating to the Greenville area this spring, and it has been very depressing & frustrating. I am licensed, ready to go with my resume' up to date

any suggestions would be appreciated :)

We had the same problem when we moved down here, which was over 10 years ago though. The problem seems to be breaking through the bureaucracy of these big hospitals!! GHS, for example, is a giant teaching hospital. It seems if you don't know someone on the inside, or can't get a name/number of a nurse manager to contact personally- it can be hard if not impossible for your application to see the light of day!!! Your application will just float around in cyberspace, unless a nurse manager knows to look for it. We were having NO luck communicating/applying from the distance...We seemed to be ignored. It was sooo frustrating! And back then it was a more robust economy and MANY jobs were really open and available!! The so-called "nurse recruiter" at the one hospital was a joke! So, we finally got in our car and drove down here in person (even though we were not moving YET) so we could show up in person at the hospitals. Much harder to ignore people showing up in person! This was a huge help! We also managed to get some inside names and numbers from a couple of nurses we met at a church we visited. Yes, this is the south, church can get you many helpful contacts. We did find jobs then...

I do need to emphasize the general economy is different now, and I think it is generally much harder for a nurse to find a job right now. I know some local new grads who simply can not get hired. BUT with 10 yrs experience, this should be a big help to you. You may need to wait until you actually move down here so you can hit the hospitals in person. Well, this may not have been much help but those are my :twocents:

WOW, thanks so much for responding so quickly to my post, it makes so much sense now... We are hoping to be in Greenville come march, as we already own a house here, I just hope something comes through

Have you checked out Spartanburg Regional? I worked there in the NICU for 2 years and absolutely loved it. Many of my former classmates still work in the CVRU, Trauma ICU, SICU, CCU, and loved it, and they have THE best ED in the country as far as I'm concerned. Anyway. Enough of me gushing. I miss it... can you tell? I lived in Greenville and commuted to Regional. Took me 20-30 min. Not bad.

Yes, depending on where you live in Greenville..a trek to Spartanburg might be in your future. I know that Mary Black Hospital system has a TON of openings; and is a great place to work.

There are approx. 7 nursing schools piping out nursing student in the Greenville area. Greenville Tech, Tri-County tech, USC Upstate, Virginia College, Clemson University, Lander University and Piedmont tech (the last two in Greenwood county, but close enought to count). With that said, Greenville Tech graduates a new group of 20 or so nurses every 5 weeks. The market is flooded with Nurses in the upstate. Like they say, "Its not what you know, it's who you know," as far as jobs go.
