trouble with blood glucose check

Hi all,

I just experienced my 2nd day of clinicals and had a horrible time getting enough blood for the glucometer to read. I understand the procedure from class and was successful with it in our lab. But, I simply could not get enough blood from either one of my elderly ladies for the glucometer to read. What do you do when you prick the finger and very little or no blood comes out???

What am I not doing right?

:nuke:Just as a FYI, dry off your alcohol before you poke, as alcohol converts to a sugar and will raise your blood sugar. Have a great day!

Thanks to everyone for all of the wonderful tips. I have tried all of your suggestions and they have made a huge difference. I'm sure my residents appreciate not having to be stuck again and again. Some of my ladies enjoy a warm wash cloth in the morning and actually look forward to me bringing them one.

Thanks again!
