When I was in the Upstate New York area, around the Berkshire Mountains, I was not able to find openings for PRN Agency positions. I was told that in that area, there were few opportunities for Travel or Agency Nurses. I was also told, by another friend from that area, that there are multiple Nursing Schools that are providing a plentiful work force.
I am referring to a time frame of, four years ago. This may have changed quite a bit in today's environment. I did want to share my experience and honest feedback with you.
Do not give up, and I am sure we will hear from other posters with more current experience and ideas. What I would do, is figure out the geographical area I wanted to work within and contact some good Agencies to see if they could get a contract for you in the area and specialty you would like to work within. Nursefinders, On Assignment, and Cross Country (to name a few good ones) have national contracts. I would start with contacting them, keeping good notes, and shop around. Researching the area and the Agencies can not be over done, IMHO.
Good luck to you and let us know how you make out.
