Traveling Independent Contractor

Published

I have worked with several travel agencies and but through word of mouth found a traveling job as an independent contractor. I want to continue to work as an independent contractor but wonder if there is an easier way to find a position then cold calling. When talking to traveling companies they always refer to their 'Lists" of available openings. How do I get access to these lists? If you go to a site like Absolutely Healthcare they don't give the name of the facility and direct you to a recruiter. Is there a subscription based list that facilities send their postings to?

Hello, I recently applied for an NPI number and Medicaid provider number to do "independent contract" work, however, Idid it thru a company that provides me with family contact information. I turn, they get 15% of what i make as a "fee". I too want to break away from this. If ido find anything in the way of a list i will let you know.BTW, is it home care you are doing? Where are you located?

Charlee,

I did sign up with a company called TFC staffing and billing. it's located in NY. I have yet to take an assignment with them though. I am hoping to try and find work without the help of the agency. There is a way to apply directly for an NPI without paying what I paid ($125) for the agency to handle the paperwork. However, it is A LOT of paper i must say. You can go to this link....http://www.cms.hhs.gov/cmsforms/downloads/CMS10114.pdf

that is a link to the initial application and there may be a phone number where you can get more information. I don't know how much this will help but Good luck and if you need help finding out more info let me know.

Yikes, definitely do the NPI online (took me like 15 min to do) rather than paying someone to do it for you for $125. What a racket someone has going on. Going to make some cold calls this week to see what the response is to lining up work as an independent and will let you guys know.

I am also trying to run my agency/independent contractor deal. So if I register with NPI that would be first step to get on "list of travel jobs". Any help here is welcome. Thanks guys

***Michigan BSC***, i have seen a few of your posts out there and appreciate your forward thinking. However, in starting a recruitment firm, you need to have worked with an agency to have a better understanding of how the business works. This is not a must, but these days this business has become extremely competitive AND the "big boys" are taking all the contracts under their wings, so eventually you will only be able to go thru them..........at a price!

Be aware on people wanting to help; a few good souls may be willing to help, but the majority will take your money and fly. This business is not what it was 5-10 years ago where you made a call and a contract was ready. It was also unheard of agencies going out of business, but so many have gotten into it, that now you hear of agencies closing down.

Pls. do not get discouraged with what I have to say here; all I am saying is do your research first. Then, when you really are stuck and need help, you will get it.

As for the answer to your question:The "list" is compiled by an agency of all the vacant positions at various facilities that need to be filled. This list is started from scratch and is made by cold calling all the facilities. It can be very time consuming, so if you do find someone "selling" this list, pls do let me know.

Good luck and PM me if you have any other questions.
