Took my first prn travel assignment on a ICU floor. When I go to look at my pts, one is on CRRT. I find the charge and ask her why I have 2 pts, one being 1:1. And she just tells me they're short staffed. At this point I completely refuse to take the assignment because I'm new here, don't know anything about the unit, and don't want to kill this CRRT pt. Nursing supervisor gets involved, and I end up getting tripped without the CRRT pt which was fine, but took almost an hour to take care of. I'm just so blown away that they would be so risky in making an assignment, and giving it to someone who they have no idea what they're capable of. More of a vent, but I would like advice on how to deal with situations like this in the future.
