I was wondering if it is possible to do travel nursing when you are encumbered with a family?

My husband is disabled and my kids are homeschooled. I just wonder if travel nursing makes provisions for nurses with families, or is it strictly for the single person?

I guess it depends on what you mean by making provisons for families. You can take a housing allowance instead of company paid housing and find your own place to live if you want. Some companies will find you a larger apartment and you pay the difference in what their basic housing might be. After that, like any other job, you are on your own. It is between you and the hospital where you work to work out a schedule. They may or may not be flexible to allow for you to take care of your family. It won't be any different than any other job though. You do have to commit to full time, but scheduling varies. There are a lot of travelers who travel with children, spouses, and animals.

I travelled for the better part of 12 years. I met my husband on an assignment, we were both single parents (with full custody). We continued to travel with 2 school age children, a dog and at times up to 6 cats! We had the advantage of free 2 bedroom apts, as roomies, but as the kids aged took advantage of upgrades or paid the extra for a larger place, we even rented a 3br house with pool! Now kids aren't a prob to housing, but pets can be and you are expected to pay the pet fees, not your company.

I also travel with family. My daughter and my fiance. What I do is locate in an area with 4-5 major cities within an hours drive. That way I have my choice of assignments and do not have to keep moving the kid.

I wondered the same thing about traveling. I am considering it and have to ask, how did you travel with kids? How did you handle their schooling?

I travel in an RV with hubby, child, and 2 goldfish... We homeschool and have a small plastic aquarium that we put in the sink before the head down the road. They make RVs with up to FOUR bunks in the back now.

I know others who do the homeschool and apartment thing.. I know of others who do school one semester at a time and others who take 9month "school" assignments and 3 month "summer" assignments.

If you want to travel with family bad enough, it can be done! There are some trade outs, but all in all... my son loves to travel and be homeschooled.
