Travel nursing as an NP

Published

I am currently in an FNP program and am interested in traveling in the future. Does anyone have experience traveling as an FNP and have any advice on getting there?

My RN experience is in NICU so I have NRP, STABLE, and BLS. I graduate in 1.5 years and am planning on having ACLS and PALS at that time.

Thank you!

I got started traveling as a psych np by calling the companies that had been sending me recruiting emails and cold calling the others

Staffcare, advancedpractice.com, aureus, Barton, Jackson/Coker, etc

If they have jobs they will recruit you.

It is called Locum Tenens.

Careful, the money is addictive, VERY ADDICTIVE. It's usually a contract position. This means two things; save half of what you get paid for taxes, (hint become a resident of a state that has no income tax. Form an LLC and protect your assets and write everything off on taxes.) if you don't work, you don't get paid. If you don't have a base, between gigs can hurt your savings.

If I had to do it again. I'd buy an RV in Florida and register it there (taxed once in Florida), place it in your LLC, take the housing as perdiem to pay for the RV. Summers in the north, like Montana and winters in the south, like Arizona. Huge need for psych NPs just now.

I am a TN state resident and have no state income tax. As long as I maintain my residency in TN while traveling does that mean I do t have to pay state taxes for the states I've worked in? Also...I believe In TN we only pay on automobiles once at time of purchased, I imagine an RV would be the same? If so, that is a great idea to save $. How much experience do I need as an FNP to start locus positions?

Re: how much experience.

I don't think there are any specific requirements. Try to get a sense of the job from your interview and see if it seems doable.

I had two years in a male prison, so I'm going with 2yrs as my answer.

I am missing the money badly. We are considering traveling again. Establishing residency in Nevada and incorporating there. Florida would be nice as well.
